College Grove (Cricket Ground)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The College Grove Cricket Ground in Wakefield held a first class match in 1878 when Yorkshire CCC played Surrey CCC [1]. Yorkshire won by an innings and 3 runs but the small size of the ground mitigated against it being used again for county fixtures.
The ground was first used by Wakefield Cricket Club in 1873 and was officially opened on July 10 of that year when a United South of England XI played a local XXII. The All-England XI played there again the following summer and Yorkshire's Second XI used the venue until the 1960s. After the Second World War the ground was also used for Hockey and was the home of Wakefield Rugby Football Club. Wakefield RFC folded with the onset of professionalism in 1989 and the ground became disused. The old cricket pavilion was demolished in 2003.
