[edit] Biography
He represented Britain in the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships, San Sebastiien[1]. He was a member of the same team and shared a room with Tom Simpson prior to his death in 1967[2]. In 1966, Lewis admitted that the reason he had not joined a professional European team at the time, was because he wanted nothing to do with the culture of drug use which existed at the time.[3]. Lewis was the last Welshman to ride the Tour de France in 1968 until Geraint Thomas in 2007.
Lewis reached the high point in his career at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964. He was the highest placed British rider in the Men's Individual Road Race when he finished in a time of 4:39:51.74, finishing in 25th place. At the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica, he missed out on the opportunity of a medal.
Lewis turned professional in 1967, and completed the Tour de France representing the Great Britain national team. He was the only rider to have two successive wins in the British National Road Race Championships in Essex, in 1967 and 1968.
By the time he retired, Lewis had 250 victories under his belt, 38 of those were whilst professional, including the Golden Wheel Trophy and the Linz am Rhine[1].
Determined to continue to remain involved in the world of cycling after his retirement, Lewis established Colin Lewis Cycle dealership in 1976. When he became the proprietor of a cycle shop, he was made the manager of Eastway Cycle Circuit in Hackney, and spent 7 years as the Training Director at the South East Centre of Excellence.[1]
Lewis resides in Devon with his wife Pam, and the president of Mid-Devon Cycling Club[2]. He is also the Coach on EuroCycler tours across Spain.
