Colin Gunton

Colin Ewart Gunton (1941-2003) was a systematic theologian. Gunton was born 19 January 1941. He died suddenly on 6 May 2003. As a theologian he made contributions to the Doctrine of Creation and the Doctrine of the Trinity. He is the author of 18 books and editor of 8 books covering all aspects of theology.

He was Professor of Christian Doctrine at King's College London from 1984 and co-founder with Christoph Schwoebel of the Research Institute for Systematic Theology in 1988. Gunton was actively involved in the United Reformed Church in the United Kingdom where he had been a minister since 1972. He was arguably the most important British theologian of his generation.

In 1990 he delivered the Didsbury Lectures at the Nazarene College, Manchester. In 1992 Gunton delivered the Bampton Lectures at the University of Oxford. In 1993 he delivered the Warfield Lectures at Princeton Theological Seminary.

Colin Gunton and John Webster were the founding editors of the International Journal of Systematic Theology, the first volume of which was published in 1999. He was also an active member of the Society for the Study of Theology, serving as a Committee Member (1975-1977), Secretary (1977-1987), and President (1993-1994).
