[edit] Biography

Escovedo was raised in rural Madera, CA.[citation needed] His father is Apache and his mother is of Bohemian descent.[citation needed] Escovedo began studying martial arts at the age of 6.[citation needed] When he was 13 years of age his father was sent to prison for life.[citation needed]

Following his father's imprisonment, Escovedo temporarily fell into a life of drugs and turned his back on his MMA training.[citation needed] After much soul searching, he passed the high school proficiency exam and returned to his training at Pacific Martial Arts in Fresno.[citation needed]

[edit] Education

At age 17, Escovedo decided to enroll at the Police Academy; his goal was to become a U.S. Marshall.[citation needed] During the physical exam it was revealed that Escovedo had a heart problem and had in fact survived two heart attacks.[citation needed] In December 1999, he underwent heart surgery to correct the problem.[citation needed] In 2000 he then entered the Police Academy.[citation needed] He graduated and earned an award for best physical performance.[citation needed] Because he was so young, no department would hire him.[citation needed]

[edit] Mixed martial arts career

In 2001 Escovedo fought his first fight at the Tachi Palace in Lemoore, CA, winning by triangle choke. He went on to fight such notable fighters as IFL star Bart Palaszewski and Bao Quach. In his fight with Quach, Escovedo broke his hand and his eye orbital was crushed in the first round.[citation needed] Unable to see for the next two rounds, he lost to a decision. Plastic surgery was required to allow him to see correctly again.[citation needed]

After healing, Escovedo returned to the cage to fight for the WEC. In 2002 he fought Phillip Perez for the WEC and IFC featherweight (145 lb) titles, which he won by triangle choke. In 2005, he won the WEC Native American title at lightweight (155 lb). Escovedo remained the WEC featherweight champion through March 2006.

In a title fight against Urijah Faber, Escovedo was unable to continue to the third round due to elbow strikes which resulted in a doctor's stoppage. In April 2006, he fought former UFC champion Jens Pulver in the first IFL superfight. Escovedo succumbed to Pulver's striking ability.

In December 2006, Cole was invited to compete in the The Ultimate Fighter 5 competition but was stopped short by a staph infection.[citation needed] The infection entered his spine and left him paralyzed, though he has started to walk once more.[citation needed]

His last fight was against Antonio Banuelos at WEC 23, which he lost by unanimous decision.

Cole has now started the next phase of his career and is teaching MMA at LA Boxing in Fresno CA.
