TV.com summary

Cold Case Files is a 1999—present documentary television series on the cable channel A&E Network hosted by Bill Kurtis that documents the investigation of various long-unsolved murders (referred to as "cold cases" in detectives' parlance) through the use of modern forensic science (especially recent advances in DNA techniques), and criminal psychology, in addition to recent breakthroughs in the case(s) involving previously silent witnesses. According to A&E, the show has been widely praised by law enforcement agencies and its investigative reports are commonly used training of detectives.[1] It has also served as inspiration for a number of popular later police dramas on network television.[2]

Cold Case Files first aired as a sub-series of another A&E crime documentary program, "Investigative Reports", also hosted by Bill Kurtis, which ran from 19912004.[citation needed]

  6. Through Eyes of a Child/The Killer Next Door - "Through Eyes of a Child" told the story of solving the murder of Michelle Morgan, a 4-year-old child abuse victim who was murdered by her stepmother in 1961.[3] An autopsy was conducted by the pathologist at the army base where the family lived, and the cause of death was found to be massive trauma to the chest.[3] Due to a technical error, the report was not completed until much later when an inexperienced coroner mistakenly marked the death as resulting from pneumonia and having occurred in 1976. The local prosecutor never pursued the case. In 1996 a brother who had witnessed the murder discovered his sister's erroneous death certificate. He corresponded with Deputy Coroner Bob Shay and revealed how Michelle's death really occurred. Shay subsequently got the case reopened. Investigators discovered the original autopsy report and Michelle's hospital record that showed multiple visits. To get further evidence, Michelle's remains were exhumed. Though the body had been buried for over 30 years, it still showed the marks of brutal child abuse, substantiating the brother's claims. The stepmother, Mary Morgan, was located. She initially denied the allegations and attempted to flee the country, but was caught and arrested. She eventually pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to five years in prison.[3] In the years after Michelle's death, Mary had raised four children who had collectively visited hospitals for medical care over 150 times before the age of five, suggesting that all had been abused.[3]

Portrait Of A Killer/The Tortured Truth - "Portrait of a Killer" told about how NecroSearch, a volunteer team of victim advocates with technical investigation skills, successfully investigated the disappearance of photographer Michelle Wallace, age 25, who had been reported missing from Gunnison, Colorado, in 1974. Initially police had suspected a drifter named Roy Melanson who had Michelle’s camera, but said she had given it to him. Hikers found a clump of brown hair and a piece of human scalp, but no more evidence surfaced and the case went cold. In 1992, Necrosearch members mapped out a grid in the remote area where the hair had been found and conducted an intensive surveillance, walking in a line about an arm’s length apart. Geologist Cecilia Travis spotted what appeared to be a large, white mushroom. Something near it glinted in the sun, which turned out to be Michelle's gold molar, while the “mushroom” turned out to be her skull. Other remains were uncovered, and investigators successfully obtained the evidence needed to convict Melanson for murder.[3]
