Coffin Island

Coffin Island is an island that is located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The island is 300 metres (984 ft) offshore from Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve and the island is also a protected area making up part of the reserve.[1]. With an area of 28 hectares (69 acres) the island is mostly comprised of granite.

Coffin Island is recognised as a breeding site for the Great-winged Petrel (Pterodroma macroptera)[2]. Other seabirds such as the Flesh-footed Shearwater and Little penguin also have colonies on the island [3]. The island is also a suitable habitat for the New Zealand Fur Seal with a population of approximately 100 being recorded on the island in 1990. The Australian Sea Lion is also known to inhabit the island but in much smaller numbers.

The island has sufficient soil accumulated over its surface to support a heath of predominantly Rhagodia baccata.
