Coded aperture is a technique for 2-D and 3-D imaging of radiation sources that include both focusable EM wave such as visible light and non-focusable radiation such as ionizational radiation (X-ray, Gamma ray). It was originally used in astronomy for 2-D imaging of stars. Now, extensive research has been done and is being conducted to do 2-D nuclear medicine imaging and 3-D SPECT in clinical diagnostic imaging.
