CodePlex is an open source project hosting website from Microsoft. It allows shared development of open source software projects. Its features include wiki pages, source control based on Team Foundation Server, discussion forums, issue tracking, project tagging, RSS support, statistics, and releases.
The initial beta launched in May of 2006, with the official release a month later in June. A new version of the website is released every three weeks adding additional features and updates. It has accumulated 3,587 projects as of February 10, 2008.

While Codeplex encompasses wide variety of projects, including SQL, WPF and Winforms-related projects, major activities center around .NET framework, including ASP.NET, and Microsoft's intranet collaboration server, SharePoint.
[edit] .NET Projects
The most prominent and used project that was born inside CodePlex, the AJAX Control Toolkit is a joint project between the community and Microsoft. Built upon the ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions, the Toolkit aims to be the biggest collection of web-client components available.
Other major .NET projects of CodePlex, such as Smart Client Guidance or Web Client Software Factory, have become default in their respective niches.

Interestingly, CodePlex have become a worldwide center of community SharePoint development, including, but not limited to, Community Kit for SharePoint, containing wealth of community-built Web parts, tools, source code, best practices that enables users to create community websites based on SharePoint, SharePoint Learning Kit, enabling users to create eLearning sites, SharePoint Ajax Toolkit, SharePoint Manager, and SharePoint Templates.

VFPX is a Visual FoxPro Community effort to create open source add-ons for Visual FoxPro 9.0. The code, classes, and libraries are available on CodePlex to improve and extend Visual FoxPro. See also VFPy.
