Agustin Codazzi or Codazzi, is a city and municipality of the Department of Cesar. It was founded in 1784 by the Spanish Captain Salvador Felix de Arias with the name of El Pueblito del Espiritu Santo but later renamed after the Italian cartographer, Giovanni Battista Agostino Codazzi, who died in this place in 1859. Its located by the Serrania del Perija covering some of the area pertaining to the valley of the Cesar River.
In 1958 was proclaimed municipality due to its rapid population increase in the 1950s and 1960s triggered by an agricultural boom of cotton, that attracted people searching for jobs from many departments of Colombia; mainly from Tolima, Huila, Santander, North Santander, Antioquia, Cundinamarca, Bolivar and Magdalena.
When this boom ended the agroindustry opted for other products like Palm, Sugar Cane, liquors and milk products. In 2005 the municipality of Codazzi had approximately 52,219 inhabitants.[4]

[edit] Geography
The municipality of Codazzi is located on the northeastern area of the Department of Cesar bordering to the north with the municipality of Los Robles La Paz; to the east with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, to the south with the municipality of Becerril and to the west with the municipality of El Paso covering a total area of 1,740 km² (671.8 sq mi).
The municipality covers a portion of the valley between the Magdalena River (west) and the Serrania del Perija (east), the Casacará River (south) and the Sicarare River (north). The eastern region of the municipality of Codazzi is rugged and numerous rivers and creeks are born in the mountains of the Serrania del Perija and reaching an altitude over sea level of 3,000 m. The main rivers are the Casacara, Fernanmbuco, Magiriaimo and Sicarare. The plains on the western side of the municipality are covered by the Magdalena river and its basin.[5]

Climate varies slightly in the region by altitude depending on the mountains altitude. The municipality has two rainy season and two dry seasons through out the year averaging a temperature between the 18°C and 28°C.[6]

It was founded in 1700 by the Spanish Captain Salvador Felix de Arias with the name of El Pueblito del Espiritu Santo but later renamed after the Italian cartographer, Giovanni Battista Agostino Codazzi, who died in this same place in 1859.[7]
Felix de Arias had been sent by the Governor of Santa Marta to appease the indigenous Coyaimas-Chimilas and establish good relations with these after the initial conquest attempts.[8]
The area became part of the municipality of Los Robles La Paz until 1935 when it was proclaimed a municipality and segregated after the lobbying of a priest named Leandro Maria de Algezàres.[9] The territory was later restructured and Codazzi downgraded to corregimiento.
