Coberley

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coberley is a village in Gloucestershire, England, 3.5 miles to the south of Cheltenham, near the Cheltenham-Cirencester road.

The village is spread out along a short valley, and comprises a few farms, a hamlet with a school, and a manor (Coberley Court) with a church (dedicated to Saint Giles), situated at the confluence of a number of streams that form the River Churn, a tributary of the Thames. In medieval times the village was situated closer to the main road, near a spring to the east of Coberley Court. A short distance to the east are the sites of the mediaeval and modern villages of Upper Coberley.

The valley to the north of Coberley is the site of a Roman villa complex, and has been the source of numerous archaeological finds, including coins, tiles, pottery and mosaics.

The site was excavated by Channel 4's Time Team in 2007 for a programme that was broadcast on 03 February 2008.
