The coat of arms of Bergen

The coat of arms of Bergen consists of a wall with a gate that stands on golden hills. At the edge "SIGGILLUM : COMMUNITATIS : DE :CIVITATE : BERGENSI" is written in Latin which translates to "Seal for Bergen". The elements dates back to a two sided seal used in Bergen from 1293 to 1426. The text was in the front that also had an image of a longship. The old seal was replaced by a seal with the castle as the main component in the late 14. century. The seven hills below the castle has been interpreted a an image of Bergens seven hills.[1]

The current form has been used since 1833. Bergen is the only Norwegian municipality that have gotten approval of a coat of arms that dates back to a middle age seal.[2]

The seal has similarities with 13th century seals of Lübeck and Hamburg,[1] who were members members of the Hanseatic League like Bergen.
