From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Coastal Carolina Community College is a community college located in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
[edit] History
Coastal Carolina Community College was originally founded in 1963 as a satellite campus for Lenoir County Technical Institute. By 1965, Onslow County decided it needed its own technical college, and received permission to create the Onslow Industrial Education Center from the North Carolina General Assembly. The first courses offered were Brick Masonry, Welding, Auto Mechanics, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, and Licensed Practical Nursing.
In 1967, the State Board of Education granted the Onslow Industrial Education Center technical institute status, making it the Onslow Technical Institute. The massive increase in enrollment prompted the Board of Trustees to further heighten their status as an educational center, and the institute was granted community college status in 1970.
In 1972, seventy-five acres of land were bought along Western Boulevard, in Jacksonville, to house new structures supporting the community college. A four million dollar municipal bond was issued by the county to build ten buildings on the newly established grounds over the period from 1974 to 1991.
