The Co-op City Department of Public Safety is a law enforcement agency in New York City whose duties are to protect the property and citizens of Co-op City, and to enforce state and city laws on Co-op City property. The Co-op City Department of Public Safety has a total of 120 employees, with 75 patrol officers, 15 Emergency Services Unit officers, 6 detectives, 14 supervisors, 7 civilian dispatchers, and 3 clerical employees.

Co-op City management created the Co-op City Department of Public Safety to protect the property and citizens of Co-op City. Co-op City is the largest housing development in the world, with approximately 60,000 residents, 35 high rise buildings, 3 shopping centers, 240 duplex townhouses, 2 school complexes, and 8 parking garages over a 15-square-mile (39 km²) area.

Co-op City Department of Public Safety has the following units:

  • Patrol Unit (Officers patrol on foot and in police cars)
  • Bicycle Unit (Officers patrol on bicycles)
  • Emergency Services Unit (Officers patrol in rescue trucks, are fully certified EMT's, back up other officers when necessary, and are trained to handle rescue, tactical, and medical emergencies)
  • Detective Squad (Detectives investigate and solve crimes, apprehend criminals, and locate missing persons)
  • Gang Intelligence Unit (Officers investigate gangs and gang activity, and try to keep gangs and gang activity to a minimum)
  • Community Affairs (Officers keep in close contact with the public, and try to keep a good rapport between the public and the department)
  • Investigations Unit (Officers investigate all internal investigations involving personnel)

Public Safety Recruits must go through and pass a 7 week training course which includes all necessary training required by NYS Division of Criminal Justce Services for training as a Peace Officer. In addition, recruits go through training in physical control of a subject, the use and effects of pepper spray, and firearms training.

Public Safety Officers are equipped with a firearm, can of pepper spray, baton, handcuffs, flashlight, and police radio.

[edit] Power and authority

Public Safety Officers have Special Patrolman status. With Special Patrolman status, officers have peace officer powers while on duty, but dont have powers beyond a citizen while off duty. With peace officer powers, officers can make warrantless arrests, carry a firearm, and use physical and deadly force.
