New Edits and Teaching

Hi there, thanks for the message on my talk page. I did a Dip Ed in 2004. Am a secondary teacher, currently teaching year 5 to 10 German, will be teaching both German and French next year. Am a Gippslander and armchair railway archaeologist as well as linguist, can help out with regards to the Victorian towns sections if you like! User:AaronRichard 12:56, 12 November 05

Thanks

Thank you for fixing the redirect. What is the command, by the way? Is there a Wikipedia guide page to that?

For your message in my talk page: Thanks again! :)

Senegalese music

I reverted your change at music of Senegal. If the compilation in question is particularly notable, the reason why should be explained. Otherwise it seems awfully out-of-place to mention one out of many such compilations. Tuf-Kat 02:59, Nov 18, 2004 (UTC)

Interesting, but doesn't strike me as particularly notable even if it weren't adspeak. It may be true for some definition of "first African hip-hop compilation produced for international release", but I have a Rough Guide to African rap that's been out since earlier this year, and I would be astonished to learn if even that was the first. Saltwater Creek Ruins

I saw the photos you uploaded - what's the deal with this place? I used to have a passion for convict history when I was younger, and it really rings a bell, but I can't seem to find much on Google. Ambi 13:47, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for that. I might have to have a dig around in the books I've got and in the library and see what I can find. :) Ambi 22:41, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

In response to your question, I created a subpage by first creating a link to it from my main page (using the usual / notation), then following that red link and editing the content as with any other red link. I have no idea if there's a better way. --ScottDavis 12:05, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

VfD on Machine Poets

Just wanted to let you know that I admire your honesty in your decision to vote to delete your own article and then to actively campaign for its removal. You are evidently among that number of users who realise that a delete vote is not a criticism of the article, its subject or of the author; it's just a statement that the group/whatever under consideration needs some time to develop themselves. -Splash 7 July 2005 13:03 (UTC)

RE: Tony Abbott's Bali hospital visit

I don't believe I ever objected? I modeled the section on the response to the 2005 London bombings, but didn't separate Head of Government comments from others. Perhaps that will eventually happen, but the Abbott thing is certainly worth inclusion (though I'm not fond of him, either). :)--Cyberjunkie | Talk 08:50, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

I did? Oops. That's the problem with current events: everyone's editing at the same time! And edit conflict doesn't always work, especially when section editing. Sorry! ;-)--Cyberjunkie | Talk 09:12, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

Victoria

Regarding all the town articles you are making. Thankless task that seems to be. Thanks. Qaz (talk)

  • Maybe you should add also a {{australia-geo-stub}} or {{Victoria-geo-stub}} tag since they are very short articles? -feydey 10:05, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. I thought I was using Victorian-geo-stub, but there was an error in my little template, and I wasn't stubbing them properly. Thanks for pointing it out. Cnwb 10:13, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, and I'll point out, that the Category:Victoria geography stubs marking is not easily visible and people tend to add the more visible {{Victoria-geo-stub}} tag and so on. feydey 10:15, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, that was the problem, I was using the category and not the stub. And thanks for fixing up all those new articles. Cnwb 10:22, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Uel

I've moved this entry to a new article, List of minor Biblical figures. I hope this outcome is satisfactory to you, as it preserves the information, which is not likely to be expanded upon. Cheers!  BD2412 talk 01:33, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Re your note on Australian towns

Thanks for the acknowledgement. I'm glad you're finding the plain names lists useful as you create and improve Victorian towns. Ideally we'll end up with an article for every significant town, so that as people find interesting tidbits about them, they already find an article to add them to. --Scott Davis Talk 05:13, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Seems u didn’t get the point,

Popups

It took about four hours (with a lot of cache-clearing and restarting and whatever else I could think of doing) for the popups to start working. But shortly after it started working, Safari started crashing every few minutes, which a lot of other people had reported happening with Safari. At that stage, I actually decided to try out mozilla firefox as my browser instead, which is what I've been using ever since. I suppose it depends whether you think the bonus of popups is worth the hassle of changing your browser. RMoloney (talk) 15:48, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Davido, Victoria

Hi Cnwb, you oferred to check out Davido, Victoria while at the State Library this weekend on the Wikipedia:Australian Wikipedians' notice board. The Phantom user provided this book as a source: Broome, Richard and Frost, Alan. The Colonial Experience: The Port Phillip District, 1834-1850. The book appears in Google. Apparently it is mentioned in chapter 3. It's possible that it all chacks out. If you have some time on your hands and are able to get your hands on the book, would you mind looking into it please? see the noticeboard and article talk page/history for details of exchange if interested. Thanks Adz 13:50, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Ofcourse. I love looking stuff up in the domed reading room (where all the books on Australia are kept). Thanks so much for the reference. Cnwb 13:55, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
It seems to be a Victorian high school/VCE text book - see http://www.latrobe.edu.au/history/news/vce/vcecolonial.htm Thanks. --Scott Davis Talk 14:18, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the information on the Frost & Broome book. It's on the shelf in the La Trobe Reading Room (aka domed reading room) at the State Library, so I'll check it out today. --Cnwb 23:13, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for going to the effort and researching this Cnwb. Although it turned out to be a hoax I'm glad we went to the effort to check. -- Adz 13:16, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for doing the research. The author has now admitted it was a test to see if Wikipedia can be trusted :-( While he proved his point, it wasted a lot of your time. Sorry about that, but thankyou. --Scott Davis Talk 12:23, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Gippsland cat

Did you create Gippsland phantom cat by copying from Gippsland puma? The policy says not to do this. One: You must attribute the article the material came form in the edit summary of the new one to respect the copyright of authors in the original article under the GFDL. Two: The move link at the to does a similar job, but preserves the history of the article properly. Do you mind if I practice with my new admin powers to do the move properly? If I do it right the histories should end up OK. --Scott Davis Talk 12:23, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

I've merged the histories - I think it worked, but perhaps I should have used better edit summaries too. --Scott Davis Talk 13:17, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
Sorry. I wasn't aware of the policy, and should have checked. At the time I made the redirect I thought I was the only author of the original, but now I remember that others had contributed also (I was lazy, and I should have checked the history). There was also discussion on the Australian Noticeboard about moving the article to a more appropriately named one. But besides that, I was ignorant of the policy, so thanks for pointing it out and fixing the holes I left. --Cnwb 21:02, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
No worries. It's the first time I've had the chance to fix that sort of thing, so now I know what those tools look like, and what the outcome looks like.--Scott Davis Talk 21:42, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Gippsland Grammar School Vandalism

I see that you're consistantly reverting vadalism on this page, as well as me. Should we get someone to lock it for awhile? Swarve 23:36, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

All the vandalism is coming from a single IP; 202.76.131.2. This user has been blocked once before (on 18 October), and since then has persisted in vandalism. Maybe we should involve an administrator? -- Cnwb 23:46, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
Yes i think we should invovle admin, i've never done it before so i'm not sure who to ask/what to do. Swarve 23:49, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
Done. I just followed the procedures listed here Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. --Cnwb 23:58, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

maps

Hi thanks about your comment about my maps, I use Corel Painter to make most of them. I'm starting to learn how to use different layers with it at the moment, such as a separate layer for each colour for street maps, then they go easily together. I dont think I could do them other than the most simplest ones without a program which used layers. Well I wasnt sure which one you were referring to but maybe that gives you some idea. Astrokey44 10:59, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

It was the CBD map I was referring to. I might have a dabble myself, when I get this impending exam out of the way. I'm fairly familiar with Photoshop, and have access to Illustrator, but really need to brush up on my skills. Do you use pre-existing maps as some kind of template, or something? -Cnwb 11:07, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
Yes I trace over it, I think (hope) thats ok because I change colours/dont use all the same information. Astrokey44 11:11, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
I guess you've just gotta be careful of phantom streets. ;-) Cnwb 11:14, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
lol well if they did that no-one would trust their maps I guess. I think its ok since maps from different companies would show the exact same information. They talked about it here Wikipedia_talk:Copyright_FAQ#Maps Astrokey44 11:20, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

re: Rove McManus links

I see your point about the links. Someone had accidentally included a bad link there (the original one was quite good), and then doubled up. So I got rid of one. They might be home pages, but they list a lot of useful information about Rove McManus. The more information the better, right? Most of it is verified on Rove's official homepage, so I think that we can say that they are accurate. Maybe that is a topic for debate though. Do you need a 2nd link when on Rove's own site it says much the same things? (just a bit more difficult to find). I would just rather have more info than less. That's my personal opinion though. 203.122.218.47 09:09, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

You're a sysop!

Hi, Cnwb/Archive 1, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, ban anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on Votes for deletion (provided there's a consensus) for more than one week, protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=

Please also add your name to WP:LA. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:02, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Squizzy Taylors Hotel

This hotel was known as the 'Renown' from at least 1974 till maybe 1995- the name 'squizzies' etc. is a nineties affectation-as far as know it has been the 'renown' for many decades post WW2 Otherwise the list of melbourne pubs is commendable. 128.250.87.108 02:42, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks very much for the information on the Renown Tavern. I'm curious as to how you arrived at my hotels page? Do you have more information about the hotels I've listed? Cnwb 02:45, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Dont be paranoid-it came up on a search of 'melbourne hotels' Will keep an eye out for the 'correct' names for them--up until say 1980 most of the inner city pubs were dives filled with old, old diggers reminiscing, pissed out of their tiny minds. And importantly all preserved as tho' it was still 1951. Up until 1979 the 'royal derby' was particularily untouched the 'D' in 'Derby had fallen of and read the 'royal erby' If only I had the sense to photograph it. But you never do. Now is always the time. Oh yeah Ive just thought- the 'grace darling' has always been known as the 'grey starling' 128.250.87.108 02:55, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

more on pubs

Its just occurred to me that the 'Sun' newspaper in 1986 had a two page display/map of pubs of Melbourne central from the 19th C--one day I will get a copy from a library-one name that sticks in my mind is the 'The lamp of Diogenes'--also the oldest remaining pub in Victoria(just the building it hasnt operated as a pub for decades) is 'the Dover' hidden away in the Gertrude/Brunswick/Nicholson block behind st Vincent. It was to be pulled down in about 1983 and was saved by the barest of threads and is now a tarted up office building or somesuch. Those frigging St Vincent catholics have a lot to answer for as they have monstered that whole area for their own interests. Hope this is of use. Lentisco 05:18, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Delete Reasons

When you delete a page with an (A7) after it, but no readable english reason - can you explain what the A7 stands for please (I cannot find a page of delete codes)

Thanks MichaelFreeman 23:43, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Michael. The 'A7' is shorthand for one of the criteria for speedy deletion (see Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion). In particular, A7 is "Unremarkable people or groups. An article about a real person, group of people, band or club that does not assert the importance or significance of its subject. If the assertion is disputed or controversial, it should be taken to AFD instead".
If I deleted a page which you feel did not deserve to be deleted, please let me know, and restore it, and, if neccessary. put it up for AfD. Hope this helps. cheers. Cnwb 00:00, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. You did delete a page on Kathleen Elsie Waddle. Have mixed feelings about the reason. This lady was a principal of the school it was linked to, The school has named one of its 5 "houses" after her - with a 150 year history of the school - they must place some importance to her - she was also another victim of an episode that has great notice in Austalian history - the 65 nurses from the HMS Vyner Brooke sinking. However, the article as it stood was not up to scratch. Perhaps can you make the text available to me, and I can try and improve and resubmit? (I don't have access to the deleted words) Thanks MichaelFreeman 00:17, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

I have restored the article (Kathleen Elsie Waddle). I would argue that she isn't quite notable enough, but I don't want to discourage you, seeing as you're relatively new, and have been doing some good solid work on New Zealand education articles. As the article currently stands, I don't know if it would make it through an AFD (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion), but I'm not going to nominate it, because I want you to have a chance to improve it first. Keep up the great work. Cnwb 00:29, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

So I borrowed a few books from the Brunswick lib and I've just had a look at them today:

  • Street names of Brunswick (Les Barnes, 994.51 BAR) - has the origins of the name of each street, as well for some of the bigger ones, a short list of buildings/shops that were at each site at various times
  • Brunswick's history: an annotated bibliography (Chris Johnston/Brunswick Community History Group, 994.5 JOHN) seriously just a bibliography - lists sources according to topic, including Aboriginal history, Architecture & buildings, Education & culture, Natural history & environment, etc.
  • Brunswick: stories and histories (Brunswick Comm History Group, 994.51 BRU) Has some interesting pictures, like a horse-drawn tram! (would be best to source the originals, though, for resolution) and great little chapter/stories on things like the brickworks, Brunswick Baths, particular people, even a history of Merri Creek.

Also, I have seen the name of the Retreat Hotel turn up quite a few times (originally the Retreat Inn) - it was the first hotel in Brunswick, est. 1842. That and the Brunswick Baths, I'd add to your page in progress. :)

Yeah, the housing's all behind (you don't have to go far to see it these days though). Some of the photos, well, I suppose you'd call it trespassing, I just call it a lively interest in the world around me... :)
There is a proposal from the apartment peeps at the moment to expand the housing. I'm not really sure what it's about, but there's a community/heritage group that wants to stop them and I think the council is accepting comments on the proposal at the moment. pfctdayelise 13:19, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Need Help and Thanks

Got your message and i see what you mean, no point having an article devoted to a show that is particulary small of insignificant. I will still do a wiki entry for MDR and at least one show (as it has become quite popular recently and the people who run the show may be going places very soon - definitely one to keep an eye on!) Also need a little help on how to get around Wikipedia, what i'm supposed to do etc.. Is there anywhere i can read for more advanced instructions? Long ago I read basics but I need more advanced knowledge now. Thanks - And also that's pretty cool about the show - Was that when MDR was broadcasting out of a Bus? or was it in Emerald somewhere or Belgrave? --ZenXi6 14:06, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Football

I noticed that you reverted User:Joeljoslin's categorization of football back to football. If I recall correctly, this is how SBS call the sport, as does the rest of the English-speaking world, ie not Australia. Should this not be the way it should be used in the article??. I don't think Joeljoslin has done anything worng. Cheers. Blnguyen 05:14, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

I can't remember where, but I've seen this issue discussed before, and the result was to stick with regional standards (ie. if the article is about an Australian subject, then the language should reflect that used in Australia). I may be wrong on this, but I'll look into it further. Actually, I'll put it to the Australian Noticeboard, as I'm sure I've seen it come up before. Cnwb 05:27, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
I think the result of the discussion was to use Football (soccer) wherever there may be confusion, and Football where confusion is unlikely. Drew (Snottygobble | Talk) 05:39, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
I've reverted it back to Football (soccer). The more I think about it, the more I seem to remember the discussion heading that way, too. Thanks Snottygobble. Cnwb 05:48, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

My RfA

Hi, we worked on a few Australian-related articles together. May be you want to make a look on my Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Alex Bakharev? abakharev 08:45, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

new-ish user - wheres your talk page?

Sorry to be a bit of a nusance and reply to your message here, unless thats where i'm supposed to reply of course : ) Thanks for the comments, it would be good to get all the suburbs with that much information in them. Somers is a fantastic place, theres not much to do there, more of a family expirience, or if you've got a boat there or a beach house, more of a place of self discovery. If you want some fun and exciting things to do theres plenty all over the mornington penninsula. I'd recomend sailing, ask to crew for somone, or make friends, don't rent a sailboat unless you know how to sail of course, but sailing on westernport is brilliant. Arthurs seat at night also brilliant. And just relax, soak all of Somers in. Enjoy it. Nick carson 13:04, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Nick, don't worry - replying on my talk page is exactly what you're supposed to do. Some users also copy their replies onto their own talk-pages, to keep things looking coherent (I sometimes do this, and will do it with this message to show you). Hope this doesn't sound too confusing.
hehe, yeah sounds perfect, I was going to suggest mini golf but as it has been revealed that wouldnt be such a great option. I think me and my girlfriend will go to arthur's seat at night, I won't say too much about the place at night, you'll see what I mean though if you ever get to go : ). Don't forget the sunset over flinders and cape schank from Merrick's Creek Inlet, or the main beach near the yacht club, it'll be around 8:50somthing. I took some photos of it starting 8:30, just perfect.

Lots of things are confusing me at the moment, but I'm getting there for sure. If you want any pictures of Somers or any more information about it just ask. And don't forget the melways ; ) you'll never get to that lighthouse without it Nick carson 13:22, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Eat Salami

Hello, I was the guy who spent countless hours on the entry 'Eat Salami'. I go on wikipedia to find out it was deleted by you. Why? I was clearly giving the background information on the term 'Eat Salami'. I don't know why in the world you would think it's spam. Thanks. >=( —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eatsalami (talkcontribs)

I have restored the article Eat Salami for you - but I have also nominated it for deletion. Cnwb 04:13, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
While i'm well aware that it could possibly be deleted, i'm very thankful that you restored it for it to have a chance at being saved. Most admins wouldn't do that. Thanks! =) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eatsalami (talkcontribs)

Tim Tams

Hello! I've just found out that you were using the [[Image:Tim_tam.jpg|Tim Tam]] image I took to thank people for support in your RfA. Congratulations! I can't believe how little-known the majestic Tim Tam is outside Australia. Cheers, AnAn 00:27, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
