BAX is an acronym for "Bcl-2-associated X protein", not "Bcl-2-associated death protein; see Oltvai et al, 1993, who state, "For this reason, hereafter we refer to p21 as Bax (i.e., Bcl-2-associated X protein)". [edit] Article Title Style Question - Acronyms

I looked in the style guidelines for article titles and didn't find the answer to this question, perhaps it has been discussed in this or other groups...What is proper when a title word is an acronym? An example: The BCL in BCL-2 is an acronym for "B-Cell Lymphoma", so should the article title be "BCL-2", or "Bcl-2"?

A related question (for the biology community) is, what standard is used for distinguishing between gene names and protein names? Even in the research literature, there are several "standards" (with the quotations emphasizing that they aren't always followed diligently). You can imagine the options: 1) gene name in all caps, protein name in lowercase; 2) gene name in italics, protein name in roman; 3) etc. Have we all agreed on a standard, and if so, what is it? This might be a good topic for a FAQ for the Molecular Biology et al project(s).

Thanks. Just finished reading our style manual. Alle ist Klar. I'll fix it for the Bcl-2 stuff as I go. One minor point WRT the naming convention is the whole p system, that is, p53, p21, p27, etc. By the standard, p53 would never be written, it would always be TP53 and TP53 for humans, Tp53 and Tp53 for orthologues, which definitely goes against the research literature (which is admitedly sloppy). Of course, the whole p system is ridiculous anyway, since a protein's weight isn't unique. (Who started that system anyway?) gC1qR/p33 huh? Hmm. I hate the "BP" (binding protein) tendency. I think about p53, it was first identified as binding to E6 in SV40, so it would have been named E6BP (ie. a human protein named by the simian virus protein it binds to--absurd). So, I've been working on apoptosis for about a year now, and only five minutes ago found out the HUGO name for PUMA is BBC3 (complement component 1, q subcomponent binding protein). Go figure. I have a question about using a Master's thesis (http://www.archive.org/download/Rickert_EVE_MES_Thesis_2005/Rickert_Eve_MES_Thesis_2005.pdf) as a reference for a Wiki page. This is my thesis, but it has been accepted and I have been awarded my degree, so it would count as an acceptable reference, and not OR, correct? In other media, generally dissertations and Master's theses are considered acceptable citations since they have been through the "peer review" of a committee. Also, there are some portions that I think could be copied wholesale for Wiki articles or sections - such as "Dynamics of the Interntional Coffee market," "Coffee and the Environment," "The International Coffee Agreement" and "'Sustainable' Coffees." Since I own the copyright, this would be ok, is that correct? Is there a special procedure or notation I should use if I want to do this? Thanks!Margareta 22:07, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

I am not a biologist so I am not sure that I have not made any mistakes. However, I was somewhat stunned at how the introduction seemed to downplay the genetic component to some of these diseases (I notice that this deficiency was corrected lower in the article, but the article should be consistent). The article seemed to only concentrate on BSE and related prion diseases and not mention the others. This is especially true when it seemed that the original article included the other prion diseases. I am not sure why. Maybe I am missing something?--ReasonIsBest 17:21, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Could you remind me how to look up the content for an article that has been deleted? I was a bit surprised to see that this one was deleted, and practically immediately. Like I think the same day someone recommend it. The user who asked that it be deleted is admitedly a new user according to their user page. The only other person who voted had a user page that I found a bit offensive. I thought if articles were not clearly a speedy delete that they were granted a 5 day discussion period. Based on some articles that I've seen that apparently exist with no complaint, Church Street, Burlington, VT may very well deserve mention on Wikipedia. Hi Clockwork - if you get a chance you should check out the fact the Molecular and Cellular Biology-stub is up for deletion --> a note has been left on the WP talk:MCB page. I left a bit of a grumpy message, but I did notice the guy has been an Admin for all of 1 day.

Also, this development mirrors the massive issues I've had with the Manual of Style bogans who just like tagging articles with annoying boxes rather than fixing them or offering constructive criticism. I've had a go rewriting a draft revision for the Manual of Style (writing about fiction) to try and inject some sense, but the whole thing still winds me up. I have been editing these 2 articles since their inception. Initially It was my intent to use "speed Square" as a general term. It has been used synonomously with the triangular square in the carpentry trade and it was intended to explain the rudimentary use and or comparison to the Steel Square. I did not realize that it was a trade name. I am a beginner at using the Wiki code,excuse the ignorance. Also to avoid redundancy, I wanted to define words like Ridge Board, there apparently is no glossary of Carpentry terms. How would you suggest starting one? Hi there too, thanks for your message. I guess that I figured I had done all that I could with the article, (peer-review and such) and thought that it might be ready for the next step. It really it is such a huge subject, hopefully my move was not a mistake....

Anyways that brings me to my question. Several of the grad students, post docs and a few professors (up to 20 indiv.) at my work and school have expressed interest in developing an "Immunology group" that would contribute to and attempt to improve all Immunology and some medicine related articles. I think that we would like to be "linked" in some way, but I get the impression that shared accounts are really a no-no here? Hi, I'm a 21 year old student, blogger and subscriber to newscientist magazine. I noticed in my web usage recently that there was particular strain on one file on my server, a pdf file relating to coffee - lifted by me from the newscientist web archive. You have hotlinked the pdf, and used it without NS or my permission as a reference for the caffeine article (Refernce 2 - Article by R. Lovett). The offending edit can be found here. Considering I am breaking copyright by actually publishing the article, but did so to share with a small group of friends on the coffeesnobs.com.au site, I would ask that you either rehost the document on a public server or remove the reference, in order that I do not expose myself any further to litigation.

I also ask that in the future you gain hosts' permission to hotlink, as quite apart from being impolite, the act is actually stealing - using a resource without permission, for free that someone else has paid for.

What I am asking is that you remove the hotlink to my file, whether that be through removing the 90% claim in the article, thereby rendering the reference unnecessary or alternatively by hosting the article elsewhere. I will be removing the source soon, but do not want to inconvenience other wikipedia users when the link to the pdf file becomes corrupt.
