[edit] Merge proposal
In the same way that the mid vowels have been merged into the close-mid articles as seperate sections, I think that the article on the close back compressed vowel should be merged with either the article on close back unrounded vowel or close back rounded vowel. I understand that there are languages that contrast all three, and that the compressed vowel is certainly distinct phonetically, but the tendency on Wikipedia is to not have distinct pages for sounds or features not readily represented in the IPA without diacritics. Another example is the alveolar fricatives: even though languages like Basque make a contrast between laminal alveolar and apical alveolar, they are all on one page (albeit in different sections). I don't so how Swedish "oro" fits in the same place as Japanese "kuuki" are on the same place. Listen to that Japanese U and the Swedish pronounciation of oro and hear the difference. There are however lots of Swedish words with the "u" sound (or close to) like the one in Japanese.213.67.208.154 20:00, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
