Clout were originally a five-piece, South African million-selling all-girl rock group formed in 1977, best known for their song "Substitute".

[edit] Career
Their first hit, "Substitute", was a cover version of an unfamiliar Righteous Brothers song, composed by Willie Wilson. Clout's version reached #1 in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Holland, Sweden, Austria, Denmark and Belgium. It occupied the #2 slot on the UK charts (where it remained for 3 weeks), halted from reaching #1 because of Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta's "You're The One That I Want".
A major success in Europe, Clout scored many more Top 10 singles, notably "Save Me", "You've Got All of Me" and "Under Fire". Interestingly, "Substitute" was also an A-side cover for Gloria Gaynor. Clout's version reached #67 on the Billboard Hot 100. One day, a 'creative' DJ decided to flip Gaynor's single to reveal the B-side - a song which went on to become one of the biggest sellers of the 70's, viz. "I Will Survive"
Clout split up in 1981, shortly after the release of their last major single, "Portable Radio".
Their Greatest Hits package was eventually released on CD in 1992. The album combined a 70's synthetic feel with hard rock.
