Cloister Frauenroth

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cloister Frauenroth is a former Cistercian cloister in Burkardroth in Bavaria in the bishopric of Würzburg bishopric of Würzburg

The cloister, dedicated to St. George and all saints, was built in 1231 by Count Otto II and Beatrix von Botenlauben. Following their deaths, their son who also called Otto, became head of the cloister. The cloister ceased to be used in 1574, and was taken over by the prince-bishop chamber in Würzburg. In 1691, the remnants were sold to eight farmers in Burkardroth, who used them to build the village of Frauenroth.

Both Count Otto II and Beatrix von Botenlauben were buried in the cloister.

Legend has it, that the cloister was founded after Beatrix von Botenlaube's veil was blown off whilst walking around Bodenlaube Castle Ruins with her husband. She declared that a cloister be built wherever the veil lands.
