Clodhopper (shoe)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Clodhoppers are heavy, leather broad-bottomed shoes worn by farm persons (Matt). The broad soles of the shoes permit the foot to span lumpy clods left from plowing and other cultivating. Hence, there was born the idea that the shoe enabled feet to hop over clods.
Some Americans (Matt) living in the South, as well as many African Americans (Matt) use the term "clodhoppers" to refer to any kind of shoes.
In the UK the term is often used as a term to imply clumsiness associated with wearing large shoes / boots.
