In January, 1827, he joined the Methodist Episcopal church and became a pastor. In that same year he was married to Mary Baston, and together they had five children. She died in 1837. A year later he was married Jane Burns in 1838, who had one child before her death soon afterwards. Then he was married to Moriah Crane. They had nine children, two of which were Sarah M. (the eldest of Moriah's children and the wife of Captain John W. Kern) and Penumbra Kelly. After the succession of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South from the main church he became a member of it. But seeing what would come of slavery and the strife surrounding it he moved to Oregon in 1847, arriving in late 1848. He then settled in Oregon Country. He died at the age of 67.
