Clifford Brown Jazz Festival

The Clifford Brown Jazz Festival is a free jazz music festival held annually at Rodney Square in Wilmington, Delaware. The first festival was held in 1989 on the open lawn in the central area of the city and has grown into the largest free jazz festival on the East Coast. The event is held in honor of Clifford Brown who died in a tragic traffic accident in 1956. Clifford Brown and the pianist Richie Powell both died in the accident. The festival is intended to keep the memory of Clifford Brown alive. Pieces written by him and tribute pieces, like the classic Benny Golson "I Remember Clifford, are often heard. Some acts are held at the Winterthur Museum and Country Estate where a fee is charged.
