[edit] History
Gary Erickson is the founder and CEO of Clif Bar. He graduated from the Orfalea College of Business with a degree in business administration in 1980. In 1986, Erickson co-founded Kali’s Bakery in Emeryville, California which sold calzones and gourmet cookies. While on a 175 mile bike ride he was eating energy bars and decided he could no longer take another bite due to the taste. He developed Clif Bar as an alternative to the many poor tasting energy bars on the market. In 1992, Kali’s introduced the first Clif Bars in the bakery. In 1997, Kali's Bakery changed its name to Clif Bar Inc., naming it after Gary's father, Clifford, who he often took hikes with. In March 1999, Clif Bar introduced Luna Bars specifically market towards women. Luna bars outpaced the sales of Clif Bars and quickly became the companies top product. Later in 1999, Inc. Magazine selected the company as one of the twenty best small businesses web sites in the country. In 2000, Inc. Magazine named Clif Bar Inc. one of the country's fastest-growing private companies for the fourth straight year in a row. In April 2000, Gary turned down a $120 million offer to buy his company. In 2002, Clif Bar introduced MOJO which combines salty and nutty flavors. Gary Erickson and his wife Kit Crawford currently run the company as co-owners.
