[edit] How to mark articles for cleanup

  1. Make sure this is the page you should be using. (See the section "Related pages" below.)
  2. Find the appropriate tag(s) in the table below.
  3. Add the tags to the top of the article.
  4. Add an explanatory note to the article's talk page and/or list the article on Wikipedia: Cleanup.

By doing this, you will put the article into one or more categories where other Wikipedians can find and fix it. The categories are linked from the tables below.

If you don't have time to do anything more than tag an article as needing cleanup, that's fine and a very useful thing to do. (Reading and evaluating articles does indeed take a lot of time and is certainly real work.) If you do have the time to do so, it would be helpful to fix one article already on the list for every one that you add. This helps ensure that at least some fix-it work actually does get done, and helps keep the size of this collection from growing without bound.

[edit] Tags for articles that need cleaning up

Shortcuts:
WP:TC
WP:TMC

The following tags should be added to articles that need a cleanup. Unless otherwise noted, they should be placed at the top of the article—before other templates, disambiguation links, images, or infoboxes (see also: WP:Hatnote#Placement). Note that the date parameter will be added by a bot if it is left off. Some tags have alternative versions that apply to situations of greater specificity.

[edit] Use in sections

Many of these cleanup tags require the "|article" as the first parameter when used at the top of an article. When used at the top of sections, replace "|article" with "|section" when using the template, for example, {{grammar}}, below. See the specific template to determine if section use is supported and appropriate.

[edit] Tag consolidation

If too many tags are piled at the top of an article, the article starts being eclipsed by the tags, especially with short or stub articles. Please try to consolidate them into the {{articleissues}} template as much as possible.

Tag Text that will be shown (and usage notes)
{{Articleissues}}
links talk edit
  • Use the article=y parameter if you use the template for the entire article, and section=y if it is used only for a particular section.
  • To tag a specific issue, set any string of text to the parameter, such as issue=y
  • To specify the month tagged for the categories that sort articles by month, type issue=June 2008 or issue=April 2007

[edit] Collaboration coordination

Some editors prefer that helpers work on leftovers and older articles, just to deal with them and get them out of the way. But whether your preference is new or old; all help is appreciated. If you work on cleanup regularly, you can add your name and a description of what you do to the Wikipedia:Cleaning department page.
