ah u beat me too it!

anyhow, i live near Ranscombe Farm and know it and cobham woods like the back of my hand.

if u ever need and help with general knowledge or pictures of the sight, just tell me Pratj 16:53, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

the bluebells are particularly good in the small bit of woodland to the left of the tunnels from Rushdean Road. but they are even better if u go up into Cobham Woods. how far did u go, basically i know everywhere between the A2, M2 Cobham and Cuxton Pratj 15:19, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

from the carpark on the A228, up to X with North Downs Way, down towards Cuxton, then parallel to the Railway line back to the carkpark. I made a short excursion at the burnt out car to the M2 bank where I took the shots of the bridges.ClemRutter 16:43, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Ex3.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Ex3.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 00:15, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Ex3.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Ex3.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:15, 18 May 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 00:15, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Delta Drawing reference on Logo programming language

I don't completely agree with your reasoning on commenting it out -- while Delta Drawing is indeed not a Logo implementation, it is clearly derived from Logo given its use of the triangular turtle cursor and turtle geometry. [edit] Cut-and-paste moves

I've just been trying to track Councils of Clovesho and related moves. It looks to me as if you've been using cut-and-paste moves, in certain places. This makes the history vanish, for example Cliffe, Kent looks as if is has hardly been edited, but that's because it's all hidden at Cliffe-at-Hoo's edit history. Also, there are many double redirects now. Could you look at WP:CUTPASTE, which explains? I'll go and fix the redirects. Also, Councils of Clovesho has been left without adequate introduction, so that one way or another this has left much to do. Charles Matthews 10:23, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] commons link in sundial

I think we will also have to add sundial as a category as that also has images, which also makes it hard in commons to add the right category to the image. Your thoughts ? P.S. sundialca a great site and a nice description (naughty boy); the creator does him/herself no favours though. I thought the nonwiki would work but... Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 11:09, 17 September 2007 (UTC) Upon closer inspection the category: sundial is within category:sundials which is a bit confusing but at least one leads to both, can we not join the two together all that is different is an s. I will recheck what category I put the Haughton under.Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 13:31, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

I agree, is there anywhere we can put up a notice to explain what we are doing before we start, otherwise someone somewhere will view it as vandalism or something! Start with the umbrella category sundials then start with the types of sundials, I am happy to assist.I will explore commons to see if there is a notice board. [edit] sundial maths

[2] has some images that to me with limited and fastly forgetting German might be worthy of a look to transfer over to Sundials or Gnomon as they begin to show the maths behind the workings. Your thoughts? Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 18:10, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

away in the real world for a couple of weeks. I like the idea of a page on the maths of sundials, then people have the choice to explore further or may only require an understanding of the maths. I will look at starting when I return. Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 17:27, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Please take a look at my 1st attempt. We can alter the text not the image without uploading again and getting this one removed. No categories / links to sundials yet, only on this page User:Edmund_Patrick/Sandbox . A possible start and good practice anyway. Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 16:03, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

I go away for a break, come back and see Gnomon and Sundial makes no sense in this diagram for 1 too much clutter. We can remove Gnomon, sundial and the sun as far as I can see. Maybe it's me (!) it took 2 + hours to get this far. By the way if others are interested in this process please let them know of the page. Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 16:13, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
started from scratch, a much better way in the long run! New image - I see you use inkscape, I may try this image again in that one and see how I go. Your thoughts on the image, a basic hopefully clear start to a horizontal sundial, and why the one in the garden will work if set up correctly. [edit] Kent Schools

I went to a grammar school myself, so can understand the situation in Kent, and in the county I was in, secondary moderns also 'called' themselves comprehensives, but there were actually true comprehensives as well, where grammar schools were not available. According to the BBC Education league tables, there are 30 comprehensives in Kent. This I presume to be an exaggeration, but it is what the schools like to call themselves. It is also unusual to have so many schools (about 90) with sixth forms.

How political is the education system in Kent? What are the objections to the selective system? To be honest, you're damn lucky to have the schools you do - many counties struggle in the state education system and people bypass it altogether, sending their children private. [edit] Medway Tributaries

Hi, I see you have started pages for the River Teise and River Beult. Do you think the River Bewl will justify a page on its own or will it be better dealt with as the major tributary of the Teise? Will you be adding the watermills? Mjroots (talk) 15:23, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Photos Yes, very funny, What I needed guidance on was the process of actually getting piccys on wikipedis. Mjroots (talk) 09:03, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

I've made a start on the watermills, but need help with getting all the refs to "Mills Archive" to link to same point at bottom of page, rather than having lots of refs all linking to same article there. Mjroots (talk) 12:49, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] railway symbols

Could you have a look at my request here and see if you can create the required symbol please? Mjroots (talk) 13:34, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Re your message - Inkscape won't run on Windows Me. I don't need those two you created now as it appears I upset the railway crowd by using the icons for a purpose that the creators hadn't intended them to be used for (thought we were supposed to be bold)! I got round the problem by using the blue symbols for the line that was not built *grin*.

The one I need creating is like this but with the horizontal line in dark blue as in . Hope that is clear enough. Mjroots (talk) 16:20, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Nearly there! Can you rejig so that the light red is in an arc to meet the dark red and rename as SPL1 then it will be perfect! Mjroots (talk) 17:23, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the welcome back!

I have got a little upset when I discovered that a large number of articles had been created on Kent "villages" - which weren't anything of the sort - saying "XXX is a village in Kent, England" on my return. It is such a pity that such a "job lot" of articles have been set up: they are often misleading. I didn't think Wikipedia was "never mind the quality, feel the width" which is what these appear to be ... Before my gap year I had been trying to be careful about more exact pieces, making it clear that a place was only eg a hamlet and not a village. Ah well!

I will certainly take a look at your suggestions. Thanks again Peter Shearan (talk) 11:21, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Medway Banner

I see you've created a banner for the Medway. River Beult appears on it twice and I can't see how to edit it. Have you seen the Medway talk page where it is suggested that the tributaries are merged into the Medway page? Mjroots (talk) 09:03, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

"General Question should be included. What is your home wikipedia?" ---> I think that it's not necessary. Because you reply from en: and only I need this. Because it's a smaller study for quality.

Thanks for the contact! I agree with all of your points! It would be nice if we could put something together as I think this is good stuff for our place articles. -- Jza84 · (talk) 01:51, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Do you think you could put a proposal together for the talk page of WP:UKCITIES about the grid refs? This is something you're clearly very well informed about (much more than myself!). I'm also conscious that I've put together a guideline with little contribution (though much talk) from many others! I'm not entirely sure I have the terminology and knowledge to put together a proposal about this anyway! -- Jza84 · (talk) 13:13, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello again! And thanks for the swift reply.
You raise valid points, and I hadn't realised this was such a minefield. To someone like myself who isn't mathmatically inclined, the co-ordinate system seems perfectly sound. But I understand the issues here for those who want precision and have the whole system's intrests at heart.
A cursory glance at the WikiProject's talk page and I can see there are several issues still being worked out. I guess the best bet (as you say) is to hang back until something is codified. It's not a problem mind, afterall, there is no deadline!!! Keep me in the loop! Thanks again, -- Jza84 · (talk) 00:32, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Medway Navigation

Just a few comments - Hartlake Bridge is missing, as is Big Bridge in Tonbridge. The two railway lines could be named and linked. Mjroots (talk) 08:01, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Grid refs & Geograph

I've had an idea! how about turning the grid refs into a direct link to the grid square on geograph? Thus Bourne Mill, Hadlow would be at TQ 627 502. Doing this would make it easier to keep an eye on new photos in that square. Mjroots (talk) 10:56, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

I've been looking at that discussion. The way I understand it is that the geotag we put in leads to Geohack. There is a link from Geohack to the relevant page on Geograph, along with lots of others. Therefore, a direct link from the grid reference to Geograph is just making that page a little easier to find, and is not preventing anyone from using any other map source. I've linked the grid refs on the Bourne page, will leave it at that for now. Dare we risk asking for comments??

BTW, the grid ref for the source of the Bourne seems wrong to me. I thought the Bourne rose above (northwest) of Ightham.Mjroots (talk) 10:07, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Meopham Mill diagram

Would it be possible to change the text "vertical shaft" to "upright shaft" on the picture? I've created a page to describe the main pieces of mill machinery and used the diagram there. Mjroots (talk) 08:38, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Helmert transformation

Thank you for helping out with the translation of the Helmert transformation article. You asked a question in your commentary, and I believe the answer is this: The OSGB36 coordinate reference system is based on the Airy 1930 ellipsoid (the Germans used Bessel 1841), while Gauss-Krüger is a map projection, not a reference system. However, the G-K is in use in some countries in Western Europe, including Germany (from which this article is translated) - and therefore G-K is used as an example in this article. --MoRsE (talk) 11:12, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

I could perhaps take a look at it later in the week when I have more time. I should have plenty of examples if I start going through my books. As you said, it could be useful to include some other ones, like Heyford 1910/International 1924 (basically the same one), Bessel 1841, and Krassovsky 1940, which are some of the more popular ones, before the age of satellite positioning. Today, and in the future, the WGS-84 (GPS reference system) and GRS-80 (basis of the EUREF reference system) will be among the more used ones. --MoRsE (talk) 14:36, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Grid refs

More work for me to do then! :/ I saw you had been adding grid refs, but you forgot the spaces (is easier to read that way). I've added them in. Is a 10 figure grid ref really necessary? Mjroots (talk) 21:49, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Congénies

You said: I am reverting back your gallery edits for two reasons:

  1. Galleries do not work with the French Commune infobox, the rendering is destroyed in Firefox 2, Linux Browsers and Opera.
  2. Galleries are deprecated and there are bots around that just remove them leaving the tag commonscat.

The next edit on English must be to bring across material from French, and the Quaker significance needs to be explained on the French article. ClemRutter (talk) 20:34, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

  1. . The Congénies article looks strange in the MS-Explorer browser, with big white areas, at present.
  2. . I wasn't aware that Galleries were deprecated and swarms of bots sent out to swat them. I had better change Mabe, Cornwall and Trebah soon! Why, when 1 picture > 1000 words, do we not allow this organised way of displaying them?
  3. . I don't understand your remarks about French WP.
  4. . I am working on an article on Edward Long Fox, one of the Fox family of Falmouth (The article is in draft at User:Vernon39/Sandbox6. His venture, to put right the wrongs of war, led to firm relationships being established between London Yearly Meeting of the RSoF and the Congénies "Inspirés". This is mentioned in Henri van Etten's book, Chapitres IV and V. There are a number of conflicting accounts of "The French Business". I hope to see an account written (probably soon) after 1814, when I visit Cornwall Record Office at the end of the month.

I hope to fill the space with more material translated from the French page, and then put some English Quaker material onto the French page. Yes it does look empty at the moment in my browser, but we must take into account that screens are different widths, as some on the newer computers such as the OLPC machine that is destined for 3rd world children will be narrower still.
I see you have noticed that I had added a link to the piece I did on Robert Charleton pinmanufacturer of Bristol, Robert's Memoir 1876 was edited by his sister in law Anna F Fox. His first wife was Catherine B Fox. He was born on 1809, and his mother Elizabeth died when he was seventeen during a sojourn in Penzance and his father remarried in 1835 to Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Fox of Wellington Somerset. This does seem to tie in remarkable well with your Sandbox.

Yes, the Fox family of Falmouth Foxes were prolific and got around a lot. A local Fox says his grandfather told him he had 72 first cousins. A family of Quaker Brothers frequently married a family of Quaker Sisters, although first cousin marriages were forbidden. These familial and business networks are all documented in Milligan's Biographical dictionary of British Quakers in commerce and industry (2007). The OS problem sounds very vexing! The pin-making information is very interesting as my father's mother's father is said to have owned a pin, needle and fish-hook factory in Redditch (not a Quaker, though). Vernon White . . . [edit] east and west

Clem, well you have to say the sundials are coming along at a pace, not all I agree with at the moment but.. One thing I see you changed Houghton Hall from South / West to South East. Now I could not remember which was which so went by the text A vertical direct east or west dial has a gnomon that is parallel but raised from the wall that supports it. The hourlines run parallel to the gnomon, at an angle to the horizon. This angle is the location's latitude. The east dial drops to the right, and the west to the left. in the article. Was I that wrong, or was the article wrong. Thanks Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 20:29, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Houghton Hall- Articles are very confusing- the north wall is the south facing wall, this gets even more entertaining if the source is in Dutch, but if you look at the banner of southwest decliners you can see a direct west- this corresponds to my diagram in Waugh. Another way of looking at it is draw a compass rose N E S W (clockwise) and draw over it a box. Label that South Facing, East facing, North Facing, West facing. In each case the South has the East to the right of it. Another way of looking at it is The sun rises in the east, so the gnomon on the east facing wall appears to rise too. I have a mnemonic that I can never remember for South East decliners TANSED Three above nine- south east decline . So, after that bit of classic obfuscation- I leave it to you to decide!ClemRutter (talk) 21:45, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

I will get there next available weekend with my trusty compass, but as you have put it the new text is correct, the article was wrong. On the google map it is the building next to the tennis court, you can just about make out its shape. Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 18:56, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] British Quaker Recorded Ministers/Robert Charleton

The practice of recording in a Monthly Meeting Minute the acknowledgement that a Friend had a gift of spoken ministry began in the 1730s and was discontinued at London Yearly Meeting 1924, according to Milligan's Biographical dictionary of British Quakers in commerce and industry p. 582 (Glossary). The acknowledgement did not involve anything like ordination or any payment. Acknowledgement did permit the Recorded Minister to attend at Yearly Meeting and Meeting for Sufferings. Robert Charleton was a Recorded Minister. I suggest the existing Robert Charleton article be reviewed and content added from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, not the old Smith, Elder & Co publication. Do you have access to this source? Vernon White . . . Talk 23:37, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[Kent Libraries] give you free access to ODNB at home (if you have a library card). Vernon White . . . Talk 00:10, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Meopham

Hi Clem Thanks for your kind remark! One big problem I had when I did the edit was that huge gap between the opening para and the next. I tried all the tricks I know (but probably missed an obvious one!) to make the text keep flowing, but with no luck - hence the removal of the pic. I agree absolutely that the infobox should carry a pic - it looks complete then. Yours of the main village green fills that nicely. Maybe you have more expertise than me at filling the gap otherwise? I did consider putting the windmill pieces below that para - would that work? I'm also going to tackle all those External links, the majority of which are not even referred to in the text! [edit] Diagram help

Can you do another version of this diagram?

So that it has the outside pair of rails as standard gauge and the inner pair as metre gauge please? Mjroots (talk) 11:39, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

The centre rails both need moving out if possible, so that they are halfway between where they are now and the outside rail. If you want to do a site visit (at your expense), then the Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme is the place to go! <g> Mjroots (talk) 12:18, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

expense!? Lend me your white van, we'll load up on duty free on the way back and we'll make a profit. I took some photos of the Aire de la Baie de Somme and it's windmill in 2003- its a regular overnighting stop each July.ClemRutter (talk) 12:41, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

I intend to do a site visit myself this year! Am moving back to Kent soon. Will be having a long weekend over the water, hopefully when there will be steam to Cayeux! Mjroots (talk) 12:45, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
Any progress on this yet? Mjroots (talk) 06:05, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] River Teise

Could you check this over. An editor removed all the watermill info. I restored it as the watermills are part of the river, and the removal left the article as a stub. The edit note made reference to errors in the intro. I think I've made the necessary corrections there. Mjroots (talk) 06:05, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Raid on the Medway

Hi. I saw you changed Raid on the Medway. I didn't see a reference so I changed it to 17, which is what the book said. Could you list a reference from where you recieved the information from? (Red4tribe (talk) 02:04, 5 May 2008 (UTC))

[edit] WP Mills

In view of the discussion, I've reinstated the original proposal. You are welcome to add your name to the new list. Mjroots (talk) 14:22, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Commons

The upload form has been changed and I can't add a geograph licenced photo now. Looks like they'll have to be added to Wikipedia instead. Mjroots (talk) 17:09, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hi

Well, I'm back in God's own county now. :-) Picked up a nice book today - In Kentish Pilgrim Land by William Coles Finch (1925). Much interesting stuff in there relating to lost chapels and churches, tide mills, etc etc. Will need to read it fully first before I add snippets of info to various articles.
