Phil Weightman was elected to the seat of Cleveland in September 2006. Since his election, Phil has been working hard not only to voice community issues, but to ensure they are acted upon.
Prior to his election, Phil served as a Queensland Police Officer beginning in 1979, where he worked in Cleveland both as a Detective and as a Senior Sergeant and District Duty Officer.
Phil and his wife Kerry have called the Redlands home for 25 years. They have two children, Matt and Madeline.
Phil is actively involved in his local community and currently serves as the patron of a number of community organisations including the Matthew Stanley Foundation, Bayside Community Radio Association Inc, Phoenix Lifestyle Support, Redlands Junior Rugby League Club, Stradbroke Island Sharks Rugby League Club and Redlem Youth Events, Inc..
Phil is a member of the Moreton TAFE Advisory Council and is actively involved in the Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club on North Stradbroke Island as a patrolling member and previously as a member of the Club's management committee.
He has also involved with many local sports teams in a variety of sports including touch football, softball, swimming, cricket, rugby, and rugby league. Phil coached the Under 19s Queensland Rugby League Team in 2001-04. He has been heavily involved with Camp Quality for 18 years as a local fundraiser and previously on the management committee and regularly attends meetings on Neighbourhood Watch and P&Cs and helps out with Meals on Wheels.
Phil is passionate about achieving a safer community, greater access for disabled persons and improving aged care and child care facilities. He has a keen interest in youth issues, especially in reducing youth violence.
He is the Chair of the Transport and Main Roads Committee and a member of the Communities, Disability Services, Seniors & Youth; Police & Corrective Services; Tourism, Fair Trading & Wine Industry; Development & Women; Local Government, Planning & Sport; and the Environment & Multiculturalism subcommittees.
Born in Innisfail, throughout his childhood Phil moved between Brisbane, Goondiwindi, Townsville and back to Brisbane at the age of 16. He attended Clairvaux (now Clairvaux MacKillop) College in Mount Gravatt. He was a keen swimmer and played rugby league for Brothers and Wynnum following high school.
In 1979, he entered the police force, where he worked his way up to the level of Acting Inspector before his election in 2006. Phil holds Diplomas in Justice Administration and Public Safety and is currently completing Diplomas in Business and Project Management. He also holds a Certificate 4 in Fitness Leading, a Certificate 4 in Rugby League Coaching and a Certificate 4 in Workplace Training and Assessment.
