[edit] Origin of the name

From a lecture in college years ago, I remember a visiting academic claiming that the name "Clew" probably derives from an old map that stated that the bay has CCCLV (355) islands, which someone later read as a word.

I have no source for this I can quote, so I am placing this pearl of knowledge here, rather than in the article. It is possible this is referenced in the book A dictionary of Irish place-names by Adrian Room (ISBN 0862811325), but I am not certain. — Eoghanacht talk 17:02, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
