[edit] WHY WAS THE CLEAN AIR ACT of 1970 PASSED???

I really need to know why the Clean Air Act of 1970 was passed by the Congress?

I know that because 1. of the increase of car use 2. Their was more cars which caused pollution

Have i missed any?!!

Pollution was a major problem before there were as many cars on the road as there were in the 1970's. Although then laws were only really made when that pollution affected economic interests. The CAA (1970) was passed because of local government pressures to create official statues they could set, and also by interest groups like the Sierra Club and the National Parks Conservation Association. Reason it passed may be likely due to the creation of the EPA which could finely enforce the legislation through incentives and penalties, considering all acts prior to 1970 meerly called for research funding due to no federal agency having the juresdiction to enforce such legislation.MustangAficionado (talk) 23:52, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
