Cleander of Gela
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cleander (died 498 BC) was the first tyrant of Gela. In 505 BC he took power by overthrowing the Dorian government, which had been ruling the city for decades. He began the modernization of his hometown but was killed in 498 BC by Sabello, a Gelan who wanted to reinstitute democracy. His attempt failed however, as power was taken over by Cleander's brother Hippocrates.
