Clean Up the World was established in 1993 after Clean Up Australia founder, Ian Kiernan approached the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with an idea to take his Clean Up Australia concept global.
With their support Clean Up the World was launched in 1993. Clean Up the World is an international campaign that encourages communities around the world to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment through the Clean Up the World Membership program.
Clean Up the World weekend is held on the 3rd weekend in September each year with more than 35 million people from over 120 countries participating each year.

Anybody can become a Clean Up the World Member. Membership is free for non-corporate Members and is renewable annually.
Starting from the first Clean Up the World campaign, the improvements achieved due to the efforts of millions of volunteers around the world have been astounding.
Members participate in a range of Clean Up and Fix Up Projects, either in conjunction with the Clean Up the World Weekend or as part of a longer-term environmental project. Some examples of such activities include:
- Recycling and resource recovery
- Tree planting
- Education campaigns
- Water reuse and conservation
