Oh, I thought you were living in Scotland. I really don't care too much about which word is used but it's a shame to homogenise everthing to the American usage. That said, the whole city here is covered in 'Sweater Shops' targeting just such an audience! In Irish the word is geansaĆ­, which is very very similar to the word in Scottish Gaelic. The usage of the word jumper here in English just reflects British influences; although sweater hasn't a very appealing ring to it, even if it may be appropriate if stuck having to wear one indoors.
