- Oh, I thought you were living in Scotland. I really don't care too much about which word is used but it's a shame to homogenise everthing to the American usage. That said, the whole city here is covered in 'Sweater Shops' targeting just such an audience! In Irish the word is geansaĆ, which is very very similar to the word in Scottish Gaelic. The usage of the word jumper here in English just reflects British influences; although sweater hasn't a very appealing ring to it, even if it may be appropriate if stuck having to wear one indoors.
