As seemingly the first person to write in this talk space, allow me to begin with a significant amount of substance. The advent of digitized books has been of profound use to me as I have stumbled through old literature concerning Johnston/e history. Google has been extraordinarily helpful in this regard, not merely providing books from around the world, but also the ability to search through them. The following are just a few books that are available for free and are waiting for further analysis.

The Border Antiquities of England and Scotland by Walter Scott, Luke Clennell, John Greig - 1817 http://www.google.com/books?id=HdcHAAAAQAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=label:johnston+%22Border+Antiquities%22&ei=g0QxR7d7hPrqArix9MgB

Sir Walter Scott's Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border by Walter Scott, Thomas Finlayson Henderson - 1902 http://www.google.com/books?id=mLY4AAAAIAAJ&pg=PR5&dq=label:johnston+%22minstrelsy+of+the+scottish+border%22&ei=DkUxR9ejCoKc6gLj4q3LAQ

Introductions and Illustrations of the Annandale Family book of the Johnstones Earls and Marquis of Annandale by Sir William Fraser - 1894 http://www.google.com/books?id=jOEgAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=label:johnston

The Book of Scottish Anecdote By Alexander Hislop (See especially "A Lockerbie Lick" p. 64) http://www.google.com/books?id=FPblQm5UjZAC&printsec=frontcover&dq=label:johnston&sig=l7AtDdg6N6owWpR0aLgWOUECyIA

As I work my way through these resources, I intend a rather comprehensive overhaul of the Wiki with the hope that others will bring more resources to the table.

Additionally, I find it interesting that the Gaelic spelling of Johnston was MacIain. The current presidential contender, John McCain, has a very similar name, and I wonder if he's a very distant cousin. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Signaj90 (talkcontribs) 17:15, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

The Scottish MacIains are actually "MacDonalds" - no connection with the Border Johnston(e)s. There are also Irish McCains who are a branch of th O'Cahans. So its not likely he's a relation to the Johnstones of Clan Johnstone, though anything is possible and names in families do change over time. Signaj90, if you are interested in joining WikiProject Clans of Scotland you are certainly welcome!--Celtus (talk) 10:53, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. I'm focusing on the Christianity projects these days, and would prefer to only join the wikiproject once I know I'll be able to focus on it. However, I appreciate the invite. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Signaj90 (talkcontribs) 21:09, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
