[edit] Character history
[edit] Prior to the series
Claire is born in 1990 to Nathan Petrelli and Meredith Gordon. Claire lives with her mother until a fire destroys their apartment when Claire is a toddler. Both survive, unbeknownst to each other, as Claire is taken by the Company and adopted by Noah Bennet, an employee of the Company, and his wife, Sandra.
After being adopted, she lives in Odessa, Texas. Her adoptive parents reveal her adoption when she is young, but not the circumstances. Six months before the start of the series, as seen in "Six Months Ago", Claire becomes a cheerleader at her high school.
[edit] From "Genesis" to "Fallout"
Sometime prior to "Genesis", Claire discovers she has the ability to spontaneously regenerate. She reveals this to her friend, Zach, but to no one else. For several episodes, she struggles with this discovery, and trying to maintain a normal life. In "...", the school's football team's quarterback, Brody Mitchum attempts to rape Claire.
Unbeknownst to Claire, she is being targeted by the super-powered serial killer known as Sylar, and that Peter Petrelli and Hiro Nakamura are attempting to work together to stop this from happening. In "Homecoming", Sylar attempts to kill Claire, but she is saved by Peter. She then reveals her ability to her father, but she is surprised to find out that he already knows. In "Fallout", fearing that the Company might find her, Noah has his partner, the Haitian, use his abilities to erase the memories of everyone who knows of her ability, including Zach, who claims to not be friends with her. He also orders the Haitian to erase Claire's memory, but he secretly refuses and informs Claire of the situation.
[edit] From "Godsend" to "How to Stop and Exploding Man"
Two weeks after these vents, in "Godsend", Claire befriends Zach again and reveals her ability to him. They then embark on a search for Claire's biological parents, and successfully find her mother, Meredith. Meredith reveals she is a pyrokinetic, but nothing about Claire's father. In "Company Man", Matt Parkman and Ted Sprague arrive in Odessa and take the Bennet family hostage. Ted, with the ability to manipulate radiation, loses control, and Claire is forced to stop him. However, this reveals her ability to the Company, and they tell Noah to turn her over. Noah does not intend to let this happen, and tells the Haitian to erase his memory and take Claire somewhere safe.
On their trip, Claire becomes angry at the fact that she isn't being told everything, and leaves the Haitian in "Parasite". She goes to find Peter, but instead finds his mother, Angela, who reveals that she is Claire's biological grandmother, and that Nathan is her biological father. Claire learns of the plot to destroy New York City, and Angela's intention to get Claire out of the city before it occurs. As they are about to leave in "How to Stop and Exploding Man", Claire refuses to go and instead tries to find Peter, in order to help him. Peter has absorbed Ted's power, but has no control over it, and threatens to explode. Peter tells Claire to shoot him in order to stop it, but she cannot do it. Nathan then arrives and flies Peter away, successfully stopping the explosion from destroying the city.
[edit] Second season
Four months after the events of "How to Stop and Exploding Man", Claire and her family have relocated to Santa Clara, California, in the hopes of evading the Company. In "Four Months Later...", Noah tells her to keep a low profile, but she is soon found by her classmate, West, who takes an interest in her. While she is reluctant at first, she eventually befriends him. However, he accidentally finds out about her ability, but soon reveals that he can fly. He also reveals that as a boy, he was abducted by Noah, but he does not know of their relationship. At the same time, Noah discovers a painting by Isaac Mendez that shows Claire embracing with someone unseen, while he lays dead near her. Noah then forbids Claire to date, but she and West begin doing so in secret.
In "Out of Time", West discovers that Claire's father is his abductor and angrily leaves. Noah finds out that Claire and West were dating and says that the family must move in order to avoid being found. Claire angrily refuses and says that if they move that they will be doing so without her. In "Cautionary Tales", she attempts to reconcile with West to no avail. She is the found by Bob, an employee of the Company, and kidnapped. He then extracts some of her blood in hopes that it can be used for curative purposes. Noah captures Bob's daughter, Elle, and arranges a trade; at the same time, he befriends West and gets his assistance in his plans. After the trade, West attempts to fly Claire away but is shot down by Elle; in anger, Noah almost shoots Bob, but Mohinder shoots Noah, apparently killing him. Claire is flown home by West, where she informs her mother of the events.
[edit] Alternate future
In the alternate future seen in "Five Years Gone", Claire lives secretly in Odessa as a waitress. However, she is found by Matt, an agent of Nathan, the President of the United States. She is taken to him, where it is revealed that Sylar has been disguising himself as Nathan. He then kills Claire and takes her ability.
[edit] In Isaac Mendez's art
Claire frequently appears as a subject of Isaac's paintings. Most notably, she is the subject of a series which appears to depict Sylar attempting to kill her, which leads Peter to attempt to find her and save her life.
She is also seen in some of Isaac's other paintings. In "One Giant Leap", she is painted walking away from Zach, mirroring a scene that had just ended. In "Parasite", she is seen in a painting in Linderman's gallery, lying on an autopsy table with her chest cut open, a scene which also occurred in "One Giant Leap".
[edit] Powers and abilities
Claire can spontaneously regenerate any tissue in her body, allowing her to recover from any injury within seconds to minutes. She also rarely shows visible signs of pain after being injured. Claire's ability has not been shown to have any definite limit thus far (although it is strongly implied that having her brain removed would permanently kill her), though she does need to have foreign objects, such as a branch or a shard of glass, manually removed from her body and bones pushed back into position for the wounds to heal properly. Claire has been shown to regenerate extremities; in one second season episode, she experiments with the limits of her powers, cutting off a toe. A new toe rapidly grows into place. Describing her response to pain to West, Claire says "I feel pain; I just get over it quickly."[1]
Series writers Joe Pokaski and Aron Coleite would only comment that she "feels pain, but not the way most of us do."[2] Between her tolerance for pain and seemingly unlimited healing potential, Claire's portrayer, Hayden Panettiere has compared Claire to the X-Men character Wolverine, although she is "less hairy and without claws."[3]
