[edit] replaceability discussion

I tagged this image as replaceable, since there is nothing in this specific image that can't be replaced by a free image, such as Image:Hayden Panettiere 2007.jpg or Image:Hayden Panettiere 1 (cropped).jpg. Now, it's true that some images of characters are irreplaceable, due to copyright. For instance, Superman in a cape and tights is not replaceable, since any image of somebody dressed as superman is under a nonfree copyright (derivative work). But in the case of Image:Claire Bennet Season 2.jpg , there's nothing being shown other than Hayden Panettiere's head. There's no relevant information contained in Image:Claire Bennet Season 2.jpg , that's not in Image:Hayden Panettiere 2007.jpg or Image:Hayden Panettiere 1 (cropped).jpg. The objection to the deletion seems to be arguing for nonfree images of fictional characters in general, without addressing this specific case, which is about the use of a nonfree image of living person's face. --Rob (talk) 03:17, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

The rationale behind my dispute of the deletion is that a picture of the actress cannot serve the same encyclopedic function as a picture of the character, and trying to separate the two will only serve to create a bit of a maze. For example, should we leave the Noah Bennet image to illustrate his distinctive hornrimmed glasses and delete the Nathan Petrelli image because he doesn't have any such characteristics? Is The Haitian still The Haitian without the symbol around his neck? If we replace this image with a non-free image of Claire in her cheerleading outfit, is it no longer replaceable?
WP:NFCC specifies the deletion of non-free images in cases where free images exist that could "serve the same encyclopedic purpose"; simply put, I disagree with the assertion that this criteria applies here, as these images are images of the characters, not the actors. --jonny-mt 05:46, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
I actually agree that some Heroes character pics are not replaceable. But, we're dealing with separate articles, and I think we can look at them separately. A little minor visual "inconsistancy" is probably the price of Wikipedia's free content policy. As for Claire in a cheerleading outfit, I think such a screen shot, placed next to the appropriate supporting text, would be appropriate. As I see it, the lead image in each article, is just a visual aid, to identify who we're talking about. I suspect, in most cases, the justification of a nonfree image, will be of a screen shot, with supporting text about it's signficance. --Rob (talk) 15:47, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
