Claverdon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Claverdon is a village in Warwickshire, UK, located five miles west of the county town, Warwick. According to the 2001 UK Census the Claverdon parish (which includes the hamlets of Yarningale Common and Langley) had a population of 1,191.[1] The name Claverdon comes from the 'clover hill' which can be found near the centre of the village.[2]
The parish church is dedicated to St Michael and dates from the fifteenth century. The village was home to the Spencer family who were lords of the manor and from whom Diana Princess of Wales was descended.[3]. There is a primary school in the village, a doctors surgery and several pubs. It is served by Claverdon railway station and is not far from the M40 motorway. In 2007 the village shop was closed. The Butchers Shop, which also houses the Post Office, broadend its range of items, however it could not offer newspapers. Eventually, after a long wait, the Community shop was created which replaced the village shop. This is not housed in the centre of the village like the previous shop, but in a tin hut on the outskirts. It is also only open until 11:30 weekdays and 11:00 weekends.[4]
