Claudia Blum de Barberi (born August 9, 1948 in Cali, Valle del Cauca) is a Colombian politician and psychologist. After years of practicing her profession Blum participated in politics, gradually ascending to become senator of Colombia. She became the first woman to ever be elected President of the Congress of Colombia. Blum is married to Francisco José Barberi and has two children. She is the current Ambassador of Colombia to the United Nations in New York City.[1]

[edit] Early years
Blum studied psychology at the Universidad del Valle and worked until 1984 in her profession. In 1984 she began her political career when she ran for councilwomen. She was consecutively reelected until 1991.
[edit] Senator of Colombia (1991 - 2006)
In 1991 she ran for congress and got elected for the Senate of Colombia. Despite being affiliated to the Colombian Liberal Party Blum decided to support the official Colombian Conservative Party presidential candidate Andres Pastrana in the presidential elections of 1994. She was also reelected as senator during the 1994 legislative elections.
In 1998 Blum was once again reelected as senator in the legislative elections of this year. During the presidency of Andres Pastrana, Blum distanced herself from the Liberal party and joined the Radical Change party which supported the candidacy of independent Alvaro Uribe for the presidential elections of 2002.
On July 20, 2005 Blum became the first woman to ever get elected as President of Congress and President of the Senate of Colombia. She served the full presidency term which was of a year, ending on July 20, 2006.
In the legislative elections of 2006 Blum decided not to seek a reelection for congress. On August 2006 she is then appointed Ambassador of Colombia to the United Nations in New York City.
