Claude I. Bakewell

Claude Ignatius Bakewell (August 9, 1912 - March 18, 1987) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Bakewell graduated from St. Louis University High School, St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. in 1932. He graduated from St. Louis University School of Law, 1935. He was a lawyer in private practice. He served as member of the board of aldermen of St. Louis, Missouri from 1941 to 1945. Postmaster, city of St. Louis, 1958. He was in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946.

Bakewell was elected as a Republican to the Eightieth Congress (January 3, 1947-January 3, 1949). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Eighty-first Congress in 1948.

Bakewell was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-second Congress in a special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative John B. Sullivan (March 9, 1951- January 3, 1953). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Eighty-third Congress in 1952. He died, in University City, Missouri, March 18, 1987. He was interred at Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.
