Clas Fleming (admiral)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Clas Fleming was a 17th Century Swedish Admiral from Finland.
He is mainly remembered for having organized the first Swedish expedition to North America, which embarked from the port of Gothenburg in late 1637 and resulted in the founding of the short-lived colony of New Sweden - specifically, with the founding of Fort Christina, the first European settlement at what was to become the present Wilmington, Delaware.
He is also infamous for being the person who tested the stability of the Vasa (ship) before it sailed on its disastrous maiden voyage.
