Clarinda is a city in Page County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,690 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Page County[1].

Glenn Miller, the popular bandleader of the 1930s and 1940s, was born in Clarinda in 1904. He is famous for such hits as "In the Mood", "Pennsylvania 6500", and "Moonlight Serenade". Each summer, Clarinda hosts the Glenn Miller Festival. Bands and visitors travel from across the world to attend.
Jessie Field Shambaugh, the "Mother of 4-H", created the "3-H" symbol in Clarinda in 1902. Her clubs focused on the words: heart, hands, and home. Eventually, her club developed into the nationally know 4-H organization. Now, the 4-leaf clover with the letter 'H' on each leaf stands for: head, heart, hands, and health.
A Japanese-owned company, NSK-AKS, operates a manufacturing plant in Clarinda that produces ball and roller bearings.
Lisle Corporation, which makes hand tools and garage creepers for auto mechanics, was founded in Clarinda in 1903.
A large mental health center, the Clarinda Treatment Complex, is located on the north edge of the city.
Clarinda is the home of the Clarinda A's, a summer amateur baseball team. The team won the 1981 National Baseball Congress championship. It has sent several players on to the major leagues, notably hall of famer Ozzie Smith, who regularly returns to Clarinda for special events.
Clarinda is also the birthplace of actress/singer Marilyn Maxwell, a crowd-pleaser in Bob Hope's USO tours of Allied military bases, and is also the singer who introduced the Christmas carol "Silver Bells" in the 1951 film "The Lemon Drop Kid."
Clarinda is home to a campus of Iowa Western Community College and the Clarinda Academy, a residential foster care facility that provides residential treatment and shelter care to at-risk and delinquent male and female youth from several states.
Billy Aaron Brown, an actor from 8 Simple Rules For Dating my teenage daughter, resided in Clarinda.
In 1943 during World War II, an internment camp designed for 3,000 prisoners of war with 60 barracks and a 150 bed hospital was built in Clarinda.Clarinda News November 11, 1943 German prisoners were the first to arrive in Camp Clarinda followed by Italian and Japanese POWs in 1945. [1]
It should be noted that Clarinda was founded in 1851 and is over 150 years old. Many stories are told of such notables as Jessie James frequently passing through. In addition to farming, in the early days many horses were raised in this area. It is also the only town in the United States with the name Clarinda.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.5 km²), of which, 5.2 square miles (13.4 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.57%) is water.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 5,690 people, 2,017 households, and 1,246 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,096.1 people per square mile (423.3/km²). There were 2,188 housing units at an average density of 421.5/sq mi (162.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 92.02% White, 4.62% African American, 0.65% Native American, 1.09% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.41% of the population.
There were 2,017 households out of which 27.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% were married couples living together, 9.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 121.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 122.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,871, and the median income for a family was $43,654. Males had a median income of $35,061 versus $23,635 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,136. About 9.9% of families and 16.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.2% of those under age 18 and 6.6% of those age 65 or over.
