Clapton Girls Technology College is a secondary school located in Hackney, London, England. It was founded in 1906. There are 900 pupils in the school. In 2007 it celebrated its centenary, in the same year that it re-opened its Sixth Form. Clapton Girls Technology College is amongst the top 5% of schools that have improved nationally. The school is situated off Lower Clapton Road, otherwise known as "Murder Mile" due to its notorious crimes. More than half the students that attend are eligible for Free School Meals and under a third have special educational needs. As well as that, more than 50 languages are spoken at the school and 70% of the students hold English as an additional language. In one academic year, 75 students will join and leave the school. However, in the Year 2006, 59% of the students left with 5 A*-C compared to 34% in 2002. The Year 11 Class of 2007 have also received the highest target ever set for Year 11 students in the history of the school. Clapton Girls Technology College has also only had 7 headteachers in its history, a representation of its stability. It stands next to and is in partnership with Portico PLC which opened in 2006 as a resource centre for the public. Notably, the Portico stands on the London Orphan Asylum and the logo of the school features a sketch of the Portico Building. The head teacher, Ms Cheryl Day picked up the Headteacher of the Year award in 2007 along with her employee picking up Best Supporting Teacher/Assistant. Clapton Girls also fought off proposals by the Local Education Authority to turn the school into a mixed school in 1997-1998 with the help of students and parents.
