Rugby in Ireland began in the late 1870's under the influences of the British Army, who were then in occupation of Ireland. The oldest rugby club was formed in Trinity College Dublin in 1875.
Outside of Dublin, rugby predominated in what were called "garrison towns". One such town was Tipperary, which was the inspiration for the song "It's a Long Way to Tipperary".
Officers of the British Army formed a rugby club in Tipperary and the club became known as Clanwilliam FC. Clanwilliam is the name of the Barony within which the town of Tipperary is located. Clanwilliam FC is the fifth oldest rugby club in Ireland.
The rugby club continues in operation until this day and features 14 teams from different age groups and involving both genders. The club's information can be found here: [1]
