Clanger

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A clanger in Australian rules football is a term coined by Champion Data founder Ted Hopkins which refers to a turnover or a mistake made by a player. Its official but vague description in statistical tables is "errors including frees against".

Examples of clangers include,

  • Any blatant disposal turnover
  • Any free kick conceded
  • Dropped marks or fumbles under no pressure
  • 50m penalties conceded

A "clanger" or "clang" (in its abbreviated form) is also Australian slang for a verbal, written or physical action in which somebody has made a mistake of monumental proportions in front of his peers. This clanger will result in him being ridiculed by all his peers and brought back to his attention for the remaining years of his life.

Examples of clangers include:

  • Writing an email about a particular person only to realise you have not removed them from the distribution list
  • Thinking you have made a connection with a female dancer only to find out she was after your money
  • Saying something negative about a friend's girlfriend, only to find that friend is standing behind you
  • Turning up to a pyjama party wearing a Santa outfit
