[edit] Storylines
Claire first arrived to fill the position of nanny to Joshua Peacock, after his mother Maxine was murdered by Richard Hillman. Eventually Joshua's father, Ashley Peacock, offered Claire the job. Claire lived in the flat above Audrey Roberts' hair salon with Maria Sutherland, Fiz Brown, and Candice Stowe, before moving in with Ashley once they married.
[edit] Marriage to Ashley Peacock
After being given the job as Joshua's nanny, romance eventually blossomed between Claire and Ashley. Although there were many obstacles along the way, mainly because Ashley came to terms with his wife Maxine's death, Ashley and Claire finally cemented their relationship by sleeping together. Months later when Ashley's father Fred Elliott organised a competition to see which couple was the most loved-up, Ashley proposed to Claire in front of a packed Rovers Return. As a result, Claire accepted and they won the competition, with the prize being that they stayed at the Paris Hotel in Brighton, however Fred was so pleased for them that he payed for them to go to Paris instead.
Claire married Ashley on Christmas Day 2004, with her old flat mates Maria Sutherland, Fiz Brown and Candice Stowe as her bridesmaids.
[edit] Post-natal depression
Claire gave birth to a baby boy, Thomas, born on 17 July 2006. However, she suffered from severe post natal depression. Claire avoided spending time with Thomas and lacked any interest in him. She went to truly shocking lengths to prevent having any contact with her baby, most notably by lying that her mother was dying of cancer.
The problem came to a head in September 2006 when Claire returned her baby to the hospital in which he was born, claiming that he couldn't be her child. A desperate Claire even pushed Thomas into the middle of a busy road. Consequently, she was sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
A month later she was assessed as over her problem and allowed back home. Following the death of Ashley's father Fred, Claire renamed the child Freddie in his grandfather's honour. Claire nows loves little Freddie very much and is a devoted mum to him and Josh.
[edit] Charlie's murder
Claire was manipulated by Tracy Barlow into believing that her boyfriend Charlie Stubbs was harming her. Tracy wasn't actually a victim of abuse; it was just part of a revenge scheme against Charlie. She fell for Tracy's trick and when Tracy eventually killed Charlie, Claire wrongly believed that it was in self-defence rather than in cold-blood.
As a result, Claire campaigned against Tracy's arrest and acted as a witness for the defence at her murder trial. Claire faced public humiliation, however, when the prosecution exposed her mental health problems to the entire courtroom. When Tracy was found guilty, Claire felt that her unsuccessful testimony was to blame.
However, when Tracy's adoptive father Ken Barlow, who now knew that Charlie's death was intentional, realised how guilty Claire felt over Tracy's conviction, he told her the truth. Claire was horrified at having been set up.
She began working for Weatherfield's hotline Women In Crisis, where she met and befriended a woman who lost her child, Casey Carswell. The pair fell out when Casey took Baby Freddie without informing Claire.
[edit] Fire
In May 2007, tragedy struck when the Peacock residence was engulfed by flames. Jamie Baldwin and Kirk Sutherland managed to break in and rescue Claire. Jerry Morton went in for Freddie but was cut-off by the flames. Residents on the street feared the worst for Freddie, although it was later revealed that he had not been in the house when the fire began. He was later found in a local park. The police revealed that an accelerant had been discovered at the focal point of the fire, indicating that it was started deliberately.
Due to her previous mental illness, the police suspect that Claire is the guilty party behind the arson, and she was even arrested for the crime. Although Claire was released without charge, Ashley has begun to wonder whether she was in fact responsible. Claire, however, believes that fragile former friend Casey, who she counselled but later fell out with, is behind the blaze.
Casey was later seen stalking Claire, but Ashley doubted his wife's innocence. Yet when Ashley had the car put in for some work at Websters' Garage, a disposable camera was found, the film of which included a photograph of Casey. The couple handed it to the police and it appeared on the local news.
Despite this breakthrough, Casey was released after handing herself into the police. Shortly afterwards, a furious Claire confronted evil Casey, who manipulated Ashley into believing that his wife was the guilty party. Having successfully convinced both Ashley and the police that she didn't commit the arson, Casey smiled smugly, suggesting that Claire's suspicions are right. Claire and Casey have recently resumed their friendship, and Casey has shown an interest in Ashley. Casey has since acted on this interest and Ashley brought her into their bed for an explicit romp between the sheets under Claire's nose. Claire was a bit annoyed when she found out. She instructed Ashley to leave. He left.
[edit] Back with Ashley
Recently Claire went to a singles night in which she got drunk and found herself dancing. She phoned Sally who got Kevin to pick Claire up. After Kevin told Claire that she is a good looking bird she tried to kiss him but got rebuffed. After he took her home and she tried to explain that she doesn't fancy him she tried to open the door to her home before being greeted and then hugged by Ashley who saw that she was upset and who'd looked after Joshua and Freddie. They decided to get back together with Claire admitting to him that she went to a singles night and tried to kiss Kevin.
Originally seen as a sweet, shy and innocent character - if somewhat old-fashioned - Claire has recently been developing a reputation as a 'busybody,' following in a long tradition of the Street's female 'nosey parkers,' interfering in other people's business and often jumping to wrong conclusions. In early 2008 she shopped Kirk Sutherland to Social Services when she wrongly believed he was neglecting Chesney Battersby-Brown (who was in his care following his mother Cilla's departure to America). As a result, Chesney was taken into temporary care with a foster parent and Claire was ostracised by many of the Street's residents. She felt guilty about this afterwards, but her nosey neighbour instincts soon came to the fore again when she told Maria Connor that her husband Liam had cheated on her - having got the wrong end of the stick again when she learned he had spent the night at the home of his sister-in-law, Carla - which led to an explosive row between the Connors.
[edit] House swap
Claire and Ashley were having money problems because Ashley's butcher shop was unsuccessful. They had to delve into Josh and Freddie's accounts, that were to be used when they were older, to get money. Claire was talking to Sally about this, and Sally mentioned she wanted a bigger house. Sally suggested to Claire that they swap houses. Claire immediately agreed and they both worked on their husbands to agree to swapping houses. Sally and Kevin agreed to pay the difference between the houses and they got an estate agent to value. However, the Peacocks and the Websters have not yet swapped houses because Claire Peacock wants to sell the Peacocks' house through an estate agent.
[edit] Temporary departure
In June/July 2008, Claire will have to make a temporary departure as the actress Julia Haworth is having a baby.
