The CL class are an Australian diesel electric locomotives ordered by the Commonwealth Railways in 1970. 17 were built. They passed to Australian National after its establishment, and in 1993 the whole fleet were rebuilt into either the CLF and CLP classes by Morrison Knudsen Australia.
The CLF were intended for freight, but the CLP class were fitted with a head end power generator for use with passenger trains such as the Indian Pacific, The Ghan, and The Overland. The class are now owned by Australian Railroad Group or Genesee and Wyoming Australia on interstate freight trains.
One CLP was scrapped after the Mt Christie accident.
