[edit] World cannabis laws map

There is no exhaustive list of international cannabis laws anywhere that I can find, so please contribute by giving me additions and corrections. I will update the map promptly. CL8 07:54, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

The map states that in Ontario (Canada), possession, is legal/essentially legal. This is false. Although often unenforced, marijuana is still very much illegal. Possession of small amounts can lead to a fine. However, this being said, enforcement is at the cops' discretion, and therefore, usually results in confiscation (we all know what the cop does with the weed he confiscates). Possession over 30 grams is a criminal offense and usually results in prosecution. On the other hand, the mayor of Vancouver (nicknamed Vansterdam) has declared that he supports the legalization of marijuana. It is essentially legal in BC...where the best weed is grown. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.99.49.113 (talk) 17:16, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

marijuana is no longer legal in ontario canada. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.39.236.157 (talk) 17:15, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

i just wanted to say that i was looking at all the countries that you posted and you misspelled Colombia. Instead of the second "o" you used a "u". I am from that country and i have noticed that many people make that mistake.I like what you have though, it is very interesting. Keep it up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.149.254.155 (talk) 06:21, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Please update the map for Russia (illegal, enforced). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.95.248.65 (talk) 01:23, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello. Cannabis is illegal in Brazil, and its enforcement varies, but it's mostly enforced.DeABREU (talk) 15:01, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Spain does not allow the use of cannabis, as well as all soft drugs. It's mostly enforced. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.53.13.125 (talk) 17:23, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi there! Spanish law allows cannabis to be consumed in a private environment. Growing, or having cannabis or marijuana with you in a public place is an "administrative offence", and the offender is fined and has to surrender all of it. Traffic, though, is punished with jail. Bye,.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.81.104.13 (talk) 13:12, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Many states in the U.S. may have "legalized" mj but that just simply doesn't matter the Federal government still has it on the books as an illegal drug. therefore it is illegal in all territories of the U.S. no matter how many laws the local legislatures enact. Its in the Constitution: all federal laws supersede all local(state, county, territory, ANYTHING) laws.

New York state has definitely not decriminalized marijuana. Maybe you've heard of the Rockefeller drug laws? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.125.218.21 (talk) 07:23, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Marijuana is essentially legal in Alaska; there is no punishment for <1 oz in your home. See NORML -131.215.220.112 (talk) 23:04, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Iceland

It says on the webehigh.com page that in order to get a custodial sentence, one would need to have at least half a kilo. Not what I call minor possession

This has been updated.  :) CL8 08:39, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Posession of cannabis is illegal in Iceland and fines are issued for any amount. November 1. 2007 a man was sentenced to pay the equivalent of US$800 for posession of 142 grams of cannabis [1] November 19. 2007 a man with a record of cannabis posession was fined the equivalent of US$485 for posession of 0.28 grams of cannabis [2] September 19. 2007 a man was sentenced to pay the equivalent of US$404 for posession of 0.17 grams of cannabis [3]

OK, so the fines may be heavy, but the fact is, it IS decriminalized because it is only a FINE.

Decriminalization would IMO entail a no-punishment policy, perhaps confiscating the herb but no further penalties. In Finland, possession carries a minor fine (depending on your income, in the range of 120-500 euros) yet nobody would call this decriminalization. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.152.228.230 (talk) 14:37, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Czech republic - cannabis laws

Marijuana (among just a few widely known drugs) in Czech republic is considered to be a illegal substance, but just mainly marihuana distribution and growing cannabis plants in order to get marijuana (drug) is highly prosecuted but still is good fo the soul. On the other hand a small amount (judge's estimation dependent) of the drug solely for the purpose of its owner is tolerated. Additionally according to my subjective experience I would say that only major distributors are of concern to the Czech police in comparison with other west european countries and small groups of marihuana users often go unnoticed by policemen as unimportant in their agenda. Therefore I recommend to tag the Czech rep. orange - Illegal but often unenforced. Much the same can also be said about Slovakia due to the cultural and political similarities. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.177.107.99 (talk) 17:37, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Additionally i believe, that in the neighbouring Germany even marihuana use is heavily prosecuted, so it should be tagged Illegal, but I'm not sure about all of the federal states' laws. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.177.107.99 (talk) 17:33, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

If you can give me a source, I will change the map. CL8 21:51, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ontario

I'm almost a 100% sure that marijuana is not legal/essentially legal in Ontario. It's definately illegal, but enforcement varies. For small amounts for personal use, it's usually just a slap on the wrist or a caution, but once in a while, you will be charged. So i think Ontario should be under the Illegal but often unenforced category. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.229.66.210 (talk) 15:39, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Agreed with above. At one point marijuana was decriminalized by the courts, but I believe that has since changed. The issue is still before the courts, see recent link here http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/07/13/pot-toronto.html . Possession of a small amount for personal use is largely ignored with law enforcement focusing on those dealing or cultivating marijuana. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.225.26.52 (talk) 00:39, 31 October 2007 (UTC) The law applies to all Canadians since it is a federal law they are contesting. The current law stands for 1 year, so it is still illegal. After 1 year it becomes legal. Hence Ontario should be coloured orange. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.147.124.206 (talk) 06:10, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Yep, this is indeed true. A few years back, parliament broke for the summer, and the laws concerning use of marijuana ran out while they were out of session, so for a brief summer (I think 2003-2004?) it was essentially legal. But once the session (ha!) reformed, the law was put back into place. 20:14, November 4th, 2007 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.241.61.48 (talk) 01:14, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

In Canada, it's a federal law that regulates drugs. See: [4] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.112.100.197 (talk) 14:40, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Technically its illegal in Ontario but it isnt always enforced, and in British Columbia its unenforced. 2 out of every 3 marijuana growers in BC are left alone, and 50% of the last 1 out of 3 are let go after being arrested without being charged. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Supercrazy46 (talkcontribs) 01:34, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Pot laws deemed unconstitutional. Several cases have been confirmed as to this ruling. http://www.thepotlawhasfallen.ca/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.139.107.135 (talk) 21:36, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

I live in Ontario, and I'm 100% positive that marijuana is, in any amount, illegal. It is definitely not legal, and i would even hesitate to say that it is illegal and unenforced. I've personally had friends who have been charged for possession, but as the above posters are saying often times a slap on the wrist is all that will happen. This varies depending on the area, and also on the age group of the abusers. Police are less likely to overlook a group of adults with marijuana than say a couple of teenagers. But Ontario DOES NOT have legal marijuana, only medicinal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.95.56.117 (talk) 01:31, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

If Marijuana is legal in Ontario, then BC and Quebec (which have far more lenient Marijuana laws) would put Amsterdam to shame. Marijuana is illegal all across Canada, but enforcement varies across jurisdictions, with BC and Quebec being the most lenient. Certainly not Ontario... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.231.126.26 (talk) 17:39, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

ganja is not legal in Ontario, but its "tolerated". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.55.102.58 (talk) 07:45, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

On Brazil, consuming/selling/manufacturing marijuana is illegal, and widely repressed by legal forces.

Sorry! But, in Switzerland is canabis illegal or not? --LukeSZ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.227.208.39 (talk) 19:10, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

It is "essentially legal". While the law says it is not legal, you can smoke pot in clubs, parks and sometimes in the street and police wont even stop you. It varies through different cantonas, but you can sometimes even find shops that sell marijuana (as "aromatic pillows"). There should be a referendum sometime between 2008-2010 that may result in complete legalization. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.6.220.220 (talk) 12:30, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

The maintainers of the Ohio Portal are looking to get it to featured status. They would like to ask all project members to help improve it any way they can. What needs to be done most is the supplying of selected articles and images.

Selected Article: Indian Head Rock

There is a eight ton rock in Ohio that was removed from the Ohio River. This rock is known as the Indian Head Rock Dating back to the early 1800’s, this rock was seen sticking out of the Ohio River and used as a navigational mark for barges along the river. The names of citizens from the town of Portsmouth, Ohio are carved into the rock from the late nineteenth a early twentieth centuries. Some of the names were of well known families from Ohio. They would swim out to the rock, have their picture taken with it or simply carve their names into it.
With the advent of the Locks and Dams along the Ohio River, the rock eventually was submerged, but the legend lived on. A gentleman from Ironton, Ohio located the rock after searching a very long time for it, and he and a crew of scuba divers recovered the rock and took it to the shore to be donated to Ohio for historical value.
After hearing the news about the rock being removed, Kentucky introduced legislation against the removal of the rock. They also want the diver who found it to be prosecuted for removing the rock. Kentucky owns the greatest part of the land the river runs on. Even the Army Corp. of Engineers got involved as to how to move the rock without damaging it. Kentucky wants to have it returned to the river.

[edit] Claim Irish State in breach over MS cannabis use

by STEVEN CARROLL of Saturday 31 May 2008 http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/ireland/2008/0531/1212156446070.html Full text: Claim State in breach over MS cannabis use STEVEN CARROLL

A DUTCH lawyer has claimed the Irish Government is in breach of its commitments to the Schengen Agreement by not allowing a Galway man into the State in possession of cannabis he requires for medicinal purposes.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferer Noel McCullagh is involved in a legal battle to allow him to return to Ireland from the Netherlands in possession of his prescribed cannabis. Mr McCullagh said he has been unable to see his parents for two years because he would be arrested if found in possession of the drug by Customs officials.

His lawyer, Jasper Pauw, said that under Schengen, an agreement designed to abolish physical borders between European countries, Mr McCullagh should be allowed to bring the cannabis into Ireland.

“Ireland is not fully participating in the convention but in 2002 you signed up to part of it and you are a signatory to Article 75, which is the relevant article.

“This says when people use a medicine in a certain Schengen country and the medicine is legal in that country, people can travel freely inside the Schengen zone and bring that medicine as long as they have a certificate,” he said.

A Department of Health spokeswoman last night said: “As the law currently stands . . . it would not be possible for a cannabis extract to be licensed here for medicinal use. There are no exemptions.

“Any person entering the country with medicinal cannabis could be charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act with unauthorised possession. The Minister for Health and Children does not intend to change the law.”

The spokeswoman said Schengen compliance was a matter for the Department of Justice, which said: “Ireland will have to undergo an evaluation before we will be permitted to participate . . .this department is currently addressing the arrangements . . . for the implementation of a range of Schengen measures.”
