[edit] Introduction from Chris

Hello world!

--Cje 08:11, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Welcomes from (some of) the rest of us Wikipedians

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions.

You might find these pages useful:

You can always experiment in the sandbox.

One more thing: if you leave a note on any kind of discussion page it's always helpful to sign your post with four tildes (~~~~), which is automatically converted to your username and the date and time. Don't do this in articles themselves though as they are not 'owned' by any particular contributor.

If you have any questions, see help, leave a question at the help desk, or feel free to drop me a line on my talk page.

Thanks again and happy editing!

Welcome to the World from the World, Chris! (You may delete those headings without offending me; but they help readers to find their way around. Talking of finding one's way around, maybe you could edit your New User Log entry to give it a shorter link to this page.) I presume it's THE Open University you're involved with? Don't omit to check whether the articles about your home patch need improvement. Enjoy! Robin Patterson 12:44, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Explaining (at Chris's request) the above reference to "Headings" - I added the two headings that are now showing on this page. We seem to have a convention here that says one should not edit OTHER people's work on User pages or the corresponding talk pages; and adding headings might go close to breaching that convention if it changed the flavour of a paragraph even though not touching the words themselves. So it wasn't anything YOU had done or meant to do, Chris! (And thanks for adding the direct link from the Wikipedia:New user log) - Robin Patterson 04:04, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] substitutability doesn't need a page

I was reading your comments on substitutability and I think that you are correct. I am tempted to either speedily delete it or (perhaps even better) move it to wiktionary. I've x-posted this comment on the talk page as well to see if anyone else agrees. Nice to meet you.--Jpittman 23:19, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Good to meet you too! I've been working my way through the list of deadend articles (alongside a couple of other wikipedians) and have built up a list of articles that I will propose deletion of. Substitutability is on that list. Now I've mastered the process of putting things on VfD I'll start on that. On substitutability I want to do a little more research to see if the concept has been applied elsewhere, in which case there might be a real article. --Cje 07:52, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Well, I'm glad I wrote the above rather than proceeding to VfD. User:Lachaume has done a nice job on generalizing the article - so no need for VfD or wiktionary. --Cje 15:32, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Menalib

I am now relisting the page. That was back in the day when I was unaware of how to correctly list a page on VfD. [[User:Poccil|Peter O. (Talk)]] 21:51, Oct 7, 2004 (UTC)

VfD result was keep, and the article hqs been wikified --Cje 15:34, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Spiritual Baptist/Shouter Liberation Day

Marks the legalisation of the Spiritual Baptist Church in Trinidad and Tobago - also known as the Shouter Baptist Church. Simple enough, though people in the 'Pedia seem determined to get it wrong Guettarda 00:25, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

http://www.nalis.gov.tt/Festivals/SpiritualBaptists_ShouterLiberationDay.htm

I wish I knew what the right answer was - I would say trust Nalis, since it's an official government web site, but they are not absolutely accurate, and most of their stuff comes from newspaper stories. It's a shame that the Trinidad and Tobago Gazzette stuff they have online only covers 2002-2003 - that would, of course, be the official word on it. (Personally I think that "Spiritual/Shouter Baptist Lib. Day" or "Spiritual Baptist/Shouter Baptist Liberation Day" would be better phrasing, but I can't re-name a public holiday even if it is badly named. Guettarda 17:53, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Automatic differentiation

Hi, you added automatic differentiation to the section "Mathematics used in computer algebra systems". Of course it is possible for a CAS to use it, just as a CAS could use any numerical technique for numerical problems, e.g. interval arithmetic or Gaussian quadrature, but these techniques remain inherently numerical, and not symbolic. I am also not aware of any CAS's using automatic differentiation—perhaps you are thinking of using CASs to generate code for it, e.g. http://www.maplesoft.com/products/thirdparty/econotron/examples.aspx. So I am removing it. --Macrakis 5 July 2005 22:15 (UTC)

[edit] That CSD

I've replied fully on my talk page, but basically after reading the SD guidelines again closely it does indeed seem to be a CSD, so I've deleted it. Dan100 (Talk) 13:34, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Deadend pages

I have noticed your excellent work on deadend pages, and I apologized for dumping several hundred more just when it seemed like you were making progress. There is always some lag between the updates and when the database was actually scanned. In this case my update seems to be listing everything that was a deadend three days ago. This means there are several that I added that had been linked in the interim, which unfortunately means some work will need to be duplicated. - SimonP 12:37, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] RfC/VfD

I think it's just a few people whose latest wheeze is apparently to use VFU make an end-run around VfD. Their idea is apparently that any admin should be able to delete freely, but if another admin disputes this they're supposed to take it to VFU (first I've heard of that!) instead of just resurrecting and expanding as has been my practice (and a very successful one, too) for some time now. My defense if I get trouble from them is to list the resurrected article on VfD; in a shootout between VFU (discussion of an article you can't see) and VfD (discussion of an article you can see), VfD will win every time. --Tony SidawayTalk 17:50, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

I've knocked up a stub at British Tabulating Machine Company. — Matt Crypto 01:12, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Asrat Woldeyes

Thanks for your work on this entry; I'm also glad we could agree on keeping it. Now I'm off to see what I can learn about this Ethiopian & improve the article. -- llywrch 15:40, 1 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Yello Sub

Thanks for the work on the Yello Sub page. It's my first creation and I'm trying hard to make it conform to all standards. If you have any other advice, feel free to tell me. Flibbert 19:35, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Chicago Xtreme Wrestling

I don't see any problem with marking it for deletion. Honestly, when I post the comment on the author's talk page I don't read the articles very closely to see if they should be deleted or not. 9 times out of 10 my invitation to the author to clean up the article is not acted upon anyway. Thanks for the "heads up" though. James084 16:35, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Pål leer

Never heard of him, never heard of the team. Don't think it's verifiable anyway. Sam Vimes 20:07, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Suggesting deletion of Orientation (housing)

Hi. I suggest that we WP:PROD the Orientation (housing) article. See Talk:Orientation (housing) for details. Cheers, Chris Chittleborough 14:49, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi Chris. That was good hunting by you - I had looked around briefly but didn't find a suitable article! I've made Orientation (housing) a redirect to Passive solar since this is quicker. If you want to go ahead and mark the article for deletion that's fine by me. As tidy up I removed housing from the disambiguation Orientation page. Cje 17:10, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

That's fine by me. All fixed then. Cheers! Chris Chittleborough 17:54, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Caesar Code

I left it as a redirect, however it seems Bueller is intent on keeping the page. So feel free to AFD it, or I will -- it clearly should go. Christopher Parham (talk) 13:31, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bloggy style

Hi. It wasn't actually me who proposed the article for deletion, I just told the guy about it. Since prod policy is that you should never reprod an article (edit summary or no), I've moved the article to AfD. Thanks for being communicative! NickelShoe (Talk) 13:33, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dead-end pages

To be honest, I haven't actually been working directly from dead-end pages; I've just happened to occasionally hit articles that were listed there in other ways (like cleaning up stub categories). I'll try to remember to keep an eye on DEPd if I see it in the "what links here" list when I'm doing cleanup on an article, but I've actually done most of my editing not knowing that articles were listed on DEP to begin with. Bearcat 18:38, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Jacobin/Sandbox

Hi (Jmabel)!

Back in July 2005 you moved some new material into Jacobin/Sandbox from Jacobin. Nothing ahs happened to it since then, and it has now appeared on WP:DEP. Is this going anywhere? At the moment I'm thinking of proposing it for deletion through the proposed deletion, but thought I'd get your input first.

Thanks! Cje 15:19, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

I'll take it on. I believe there is some worthwhile material there. - Jmabel | Talk 17:19, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
That's great! I'll leave it with you Cje 17:50, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help needed on handling a dispute with a relatively new user

I found DLR P86 stock and DLR P89 stock on WP:DEP and proposed both for deletion: I left standard warning on User talk:Unisouth. The author immediately removed both tags without comment or explanation. I then marked P86 article for AfD (with a comment in the proposal that discussion should be on P89 too); I added a comment to the talk page that proposed deletion tags should not be removed without explanation - at least in the edit history. The author has immediately removed the AfD tag, though at least they explained why they thought the article is important in the edit history.

I think that both articles are at a level of detail that doesn't merit inclusion - but if consensus is against me that's fine. In that case will need some real work; wikification, copy edit, giving the context etc.

Unisouth joined in February 2006, so is still relatively new. I note that they have 1 24 hour ban for 3RR violation and multiple warnings on copyright for images. I'm feeling that I'm faced with a Docklands Light Railway enthusiast who would appear to have little interest in learning how Wikipedia works.

Some advice on how to proceed nicely would be appreciated! Although I've been around Wikipedia and Dead End Pages for a while, and have had a number of exchanges with other editors, this is the first time I've had dealings with someone who is not playing by the Wikipedia rules.

Thanks Cje 11:04, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

I have informed the editor to refrain from such actions. Continuing to do so will be considered vandalism. Please, let me know on my talk page of if he continues. Pepsidrinka 11:11, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Also, please be aware of how to tag multiple articles for deletion. The process is outlined at WP:AFD#How to list multiple related pages for deletion. You left DLR P89 stock orphaned; I went ahead and listed it for deletion in connection with the other page you nominated. Pepsidrinka 11:14, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Barnstar!

The Working Man's Barnstar
For your tireless work on Dead-end pages, this Working Man's barnstar for Cje! Wikignomes' work should not go unnoticed! ^_^ Grafikm_fr 14:28, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Missing Wikipedians

Hi. I noticed you name on Wikipedia:Missing Wikipedians, and also noticed your recent edits. Was wondering if this means you're back wih us. If that's the case you can certainly remove your name from that list. --Wizardman 15:56, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
