Quick note - Anyone know when Civilization IV will be released in the UK? I want to buy this game preferably before November 2nd for a friend's birthday. Thanks --Raddicks 19:47, 7 October 2005 (UTC) No worries just realised Amazon is shipping it. Still would be nice to have official European release dates in this article.

2005?

How can we be sure this game will be released in 2005? In the past, Firaxis has been very open about their development efforts and have even set up websites showing early assets, etc. But if one goes to Civ4.com, it just redirects to Civ3.com. Civ4 isn't even listed on their upcoming products. Where was the information about the release of Civ4 obtained? If it were really planned for a 2005 release, I'd think they would already have a website up for it. --Frecklefoot | Talk 20:51, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

The new Firaxis website does list Civilization 4 as an upcoming release. --Munchkinguy 18:38, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Coolness! I just saw that. :-) --Frecklefoot | Talk 19:06, Jan 28, 2005 (UTC)
This is cool and all, but what's up with the "possible box art" graphic? Aside from that, it's interesting to note that TIME magazine mentioned Civ 4 only in the US, not the Canadian edition. --Krupo 07:23, Jun 4, 2005 (UTC)
New update! Civ4 now releases on Oct. 1st, 2005 in the USA. Davidizer13 18:26, 22 September 2005 (UTC)
Nope, Gamespot is still saying October 24, 2005.[1] --Yamla 19:56, 22

September 2005 (UTC)

What? I read on an article from a Gamespot article that it's coming on the 1st. Oh well, I can wait a couple more weeks. Davidizer13 21:23, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
Update^^ Firaxis is saying the 25th.

In the article it says that it will be available later (Oct 28th in Europe). However, Ive already seen the game in stores (Oct 23). A salesman at local computer store said it was released on the 21st of Oct (in Sweden).

Oddly enough, some of the electronics stores' have different dates on their periodicals. One says Wednesday (October 26) and another says Thursday (October 27). Davidizer13 16:01, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

FWIW, I went to Best Buy today (the 25th) and they told me it would be available tomorrow. Friday (talk) 17:08, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

That's nothing unusual. Happened to me with Battlefield 2. bob rulz 01:27, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Leaders

The article states that several historical figures not used in previous games will be in Civ4. Weren't Napoleon and Moctezuma in Civ1 though? I'm sure I remember Louis XIV being in one of the games, too. --Ambi 13:10, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

I'm to young to have played Civ1 (no offense), now that you mention it I vaguely remeber Louis XIV being in Civ2. I'll make the changes immediately. -JCarriker 19:33, July 15, 2005 (UTC)

UN system?

I heard somewhere that there was gonna be a UN system where you could make nuclear profileration treaties and such. Is this true?

Highly doubt it, that would make the UN system entirely one issue based, i had a look on the tech tree and can't find it anywhere --Raddicks 20:13, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
Actually, I saw a screenshot on Gamespot that showed the UN secretary-general having the choice of passing various resolutions, such as common currency, nuclear profileration treaties, etc.
guess i was wrong ;-) wow! i just check civfanatics.com. its got some feature on the nuclear blast, its very impresssive. Anyone free for teaming up when civ 4 comes out mention it in my talk box ive got some very good strats i want to test out :-P. --Raddicks 00:43, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

I've owned the game since yesterday, and it does have a UN system. They can force the world into certain civics and stop the construction of nukes (now simply one kind: ICBMs). However, enough of the representatives have to agree, and a percentage of their vote is affected by your vote. Davidizer13 21:36, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Mac Version

I wonder if this Civ will be ported to the Mac like previous versions -- this article doesn't say. Anyone know? --Quasipalm 18:52, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

Not sure, but if there was Mac versions in past, a Mac version maybe is under development. HappyApple 02:44, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
There was a mac version for civ III which i played, if your not prepared to wait 4-6 months for Civ IV to come out your best bet is to use Virtual PC, or just dish out on an 1.8ghz+ windows XP baby --Raddicks 03:33, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, Civ IV will be coming out to the Mac early next year. http://www.insidemacgames.com/ And Virtual PC won't be able to run Civ IV...Virtual PC is extremely slow, and won't run anything that's come out in the past four or five years, I believe. Sorry. Ngcoll 21:37, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

System requirements

Yamla, I removed your addition to the system requirements section. It seemed to be an unnecessary defense of the game's hardware requirements, written in an argumentative tone and based on a short-sighted view of the game's audience.

The Civilization series is played by people who do not consider their computers to be video-game systems, and would not be inclined to upgrade their computer's video card, so it's not a point you can dismiss. Furthermore, it's in a section called "System requirements"; there's no need to point out that it's clearly written on the box, because we know that system requirements are written on the box. The complaint that people apparently have is not that they bought the game and can't play it, but that they know they can't play the game and are disappointed that a Civilization game would be so resource-intensive.

Finally, it's bad style to argue with the article in the text. Articles should make a coherent statement, and should not be a discussion board. If you think the text should be changed, you can change it or you can discuss it on the talk page.

RSpeer 16:29, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

I agree with the above. Also, FWIW, the version I bought did not have the system requirements on the box. Friday (talk) 16:59, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
Actually, wikipedia articles are meant to present both points of view where such a conflict exists, but I don't think you are denying that. I probably shouldn't have altered the paragraph in the way I did (better wording, placed it into a different paragraph, whatever), but the paragraph as written was and remains not neutral. Friday, where do you live? Certainly the U.S. and Canadian releases had system requirements on the box, though you may possibly have missed them (or they may have been removed at your point of sale), or perhaps you live outside of North America. --Yamla 17:27, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
NPOV doesn't mean that an article should argue with itself. I don't think this is really a POV issue, as it's such a small part of the article, and the article says many deservedly positive things about Civ 4 that are more significant than "its system requirements don't suck too much". But if that statement needs to go in, it should expand the statement about system requirements instead of contradicting it. For example, "Although Civilization IV has fairly low hardware requirements compared to most new games, many would-be players have complained about these requirements..." RSpeer 19:04, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
I will try to reword it along the lines of what you have suggested here (provided nobody beats me to the punch, of course... I hope to be busy playing Civ4 tonight...), and I'll discuss the rewording here before posting it back to the article. I agree with what you are saying. I must admit, I was quite surprised to hear people were having problems with system requirements (though not so surprised with the ATI problems), it doesn't seem to require much hardware to run the game. But again, as you point out, lots of non-gamers want to play Civ4. --Yamla 19:09, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
Now that I look again, I was indeed mistaken. They're on the bottom of the box. Funny thing, I speficially looked for them in the store, and concluded they weren't there. Oh well. As for the article, different points of view are nice, sure, but I agree that the way it was presented before wasn't very neutral. Friday (talk) 17:35, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Is this what's causing the error I get when I try to run it? "Failed to initialize renderer - check DirectX version and graphics settings". User:Zoe|(talk) 05:17, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Launch Problems

A couple of these problems seam to be the job of the publisher Take Two. It would make sence to mention them here also, instead of throwing all the blame on fraxis.

That's a good point. Have take two made an official comment? --Apyule 05:18, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Wonder

should we mention about wonders in civilization IV? I heard some controversy on the Wonders choosed in the game. (Like changing Hoover Dam to Three Gorges Dam). SYSS Mouse 04:14, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

Minor question:

Can anyone tell me the statistics on the unit called "mobile infantry"? Is this unit a foot soldier who travels by motorized vehicle? Edit: Actually, now I have the game and I see there is no mobile infantry unit (unless it is in a scenario).

Sorry for reverts

ACCK! bbatsell just pointed out that I've been reverting legitimate changes to this article. Honestly, I thought I was simply reverting removal of information, I hadn't noticed that the edits I was reverting were moving information around. Sorry about that, everyone. I'm normally very good about this. --Yamla 20:36, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
