From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Civic Holiday is the the most widely used name for a public holiday celebrated in parts of Canada on the first Monday in August.

The holiday is known by a variety of names in different provinces and municipalities, including British Columbia Day in British Columbia, Simcoe Day in Toronto, and Colonel By Day in Ottawa.

In Ontario, it is generally a low-key celebration of John Graves Simcoe, who was the first Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario (which was then known as Upper Canada).
