Notes

This template is used to cite sources in Wikipedia, specifically maps and related products.

Usage

Copy one of these three blank versions to use. Note that all fields must be lowercase, and remember to use the "|" (pipe) character between each field. Please delete any unused fields to avoid clutter in the edit window.

Description of fields

Syntax

Nested fields either rely on their parent fields, or replace them:

  • parent
    • child — may be used with parent (and is ignored if parent is not used)

Descriptions

  • author: The creator/author of the map.
  • title: The title of the map as given on the gront of the map. Required field.
    • url: If the map is available online, link to it.
  • publisher: The publisher, distributor or brand of the map. Required field.
    • location: Physical location of the publisher.
  • date: Full date of the publication being referenced. Please format in ISO 8601 YYYY-MM-DD format, e.g. "2006-02-17" (February 17, 2006). It will automatically be wikilinked.
    • OR: year: Year of the map publication, and month: Month of the map publication. If you also have the day of publication, use date instead. Please do not wikilink.
  • edition: The edition name or number, or year or range of years, of the map (e.g. "2nd edition", "1989 edition", "2006-2007 edition", etc). Please make sure to include the entire title of the edition, including the word edition.
  • scale: The scale of the map (e.g. "1: 20,000" or "1/4" = 1 mile").
  • series: The series this map is part of.
  • cartography: If the map was prepared by a company other than the publisher (e.g. "Rand McNally", "H.M. Gousha", etc), include it here.
  • page: If the map is in an atlas or other publication, include the page number here. The template will automatically include "p. " so only write the page number in the field. Do not use for standard (i.e. one-sheet) maps.
  • pages: Same as page, but for multiple pages.
  • section: The map coordinate of the feature you are referencing (e.g. "6A", "9B", "11L", etc).
  • inset: The name of the small focused inset you are referencing ("Downtown Fooburg", for example).
  • booktitle: If the map is in another publication, include the name of that publication here.
    • bookauthor: The author of the book.
  • isbn: International Standard Book Number (e.g. "0-9662209-4-3").
  • id: A unique identifier. Use if isbn is not applicable. Please be sure to specify the kind of identifier you are using, preferably with a template like {{ISSN}}.
  • accessdate: Full date when map was accessed (if online). Please format in ISO 8601 YYYY-MM-DD format, e.g. "2006-02-17" (February 17, 2006). It will automatically be wikilinked.
    • OR: accessyear: Year of access, and accessmonth: Name of the month of access. If you also have the day of publication, use date instead. Please do not wikilink.
