[edit] Usage
This template is used for citing the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships (DANFS), particularly the online version found at the United States Navy Naval Historical Center (NHC) website at this address. Though the U.S. Navy version is generally preferred, other online versions of DANFS material may be cited with this template as well.
[edit] Important note
This template is not intended to replace the template {{DANFS}}. Where public domain material from the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships is incorporated into an article {{DANFS}} must still be used in the article for the proper attribution of public domain text. (DANFS, as a work of the U.S. federal government, is in the public domain.)
[edit] Parameters
[edit] Required parameters
This template requires these parameters:
- title — the ship name. Will automatically format with italics
- url — the DANFS online URL. Can be from the NHC website (preferred) or elsewhere
[edit] Optional parameters
These optional parameters are similar to those in other citation templates:
- first, last OR author — used when there is a known author of a DANFS article (the optional authorlink will work for either)
- date — used when a date is provided. For DANFS, this is typically on new or newly updated entries.
- accessdate, accessyear, or accessmonth
These optional parameters are specific to this template:
- short — when set to "on" (or "yes") provides a succinct entry; useful as a note in a Notes, Reference style, with a full (i.e. not using short) in the References section
- link — when set to "off" (or "no") provides a full entry without wikilinks for the work title and publisher information; useful for second and additional uses to avoid overlinking within the references section
Note: if the "short" and "link" options are not necessary, leave the optional parameters completely out (i.e. don't put "short = off" or "link = on")
