Talk:City of Brussels

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Does anyone know what Bruxelles Laeken is? I have an antique silver spoon that says Bruxelles Laeken Notre Dame on the handle.

Laeken is a part of the City of Brussels municipality, in the north of Brussels. There's a church in Laeken called 'Notre Dame'. Also see the external links The Notre Dame Church of Laken and l'église Notre-Dame de Laeken (photo) --David Edgar 12:03, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

I don't agree with the statement that the city of Brussels is not the capital of Belgium. When I was working at the town hall, I was always tols to spell "ville de Bruxelles", dropping the first capital. So the Belgian Constitution mention with "ville" without first cap is merely a linguistic thing referring indeed to the City of Brussels, not the region. Also, to my knowledge, all federal ministers' offices are on the territory of the City. Not to mention that the City bought the former municipality of Laeken in 1921 officially because that is where the king resides; which wouldn't be a valid argument if the idea of the Constitution was that Brussels also covers surrounding municipalities in a way or another. Correct, the constitution speaks of stad Brussel or ville de Bruxelles. Also Art. 166 of the Constitution has nothing to do with Brussels as the capital at large, it simply creates a Brussels agglomeration of which the capital is but a part. The claim that Brussels at large is the capital is a minority view and should be changed that way--- fdewaele
I don't think it is a minority view. Look at all the Wikipedias that have articles for each entity, which one points to Brussels-City as the capital? Only the Dutch Wikipedia has it according to the constitution, and only since the 30th of december 2005. If it were a minority imposing their view that greater Brussels is the capital, then you wouldn't have a majority of references not mentioning the City of Brussels as the capital. ---moyogo 07:52, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
depends on who edited it all... or on what source they based their edits on... it's a common mistake to translate or copy from Wikipedia to Wikipedia and trnasfer errors that way as well... BTW, the official website of the city [1] states that the City of Brussels is the capital--- fdewaele, 9 June 2006 10:00 CET
Actually the Luxemburgish Wikipedia had the legal capital too. ---moyogo 08:35, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm not denying the official capital is Brussels, it's totally normal for representatives to push that in their offices. What's I'm saying is that it's probably not a minority that doesn't know, but the majority. --moyogo 08:39, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Also, even if this is legally an error, it is not in most people's conceptions of things. Look at Encarta: Its capital and largest city is Brussels or [2]: Brussels (French Bruxelles), city in central Belgium, capital and largest city of the country - They don't mention Brussels-City. I'm not saying we should just do the same, but we should mention all point of views, legal and that not correct according to the legal terms. ---moyogo 08:47, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree that all views should be included but the legally correct view should have precedence as an encyclopedia should aim to be correct. As a further explanation, the divergent general views and misconceptions should be added by way of a footnote or explanatory note in the text. --- fdewaele, 9 June 2006 11:00 CET
